COME-AS-YOU-ARE EROSA As The COCk ~ ~PLl'Fliesg By BRUCE HONICK The "happy hunting grounds" of Frank McGuire are not restricted to New York and New Jersey as one might be led to believe. This spring the Irishman zeroed in on Dillon, S. C. and ended up bagging a young man named Casey Manning. Manning comes to Carolina with credentials indicative of a bona fide college prospect. As a junior at Dillon High School he sported a 31.8 scoring average while pacing his team to an 18-2 record. As a senior Manning led the Wild cats to the State AAA crown and a 23-3 season while boasting a remarkable 34-plus average. His best single game effort was against McCall last year when he scored 62 points. He also scored 56 points in another contest. The 6-2, 165-pound cager was sought by over 60 schools, but later narrowed down his choices to three - Davidson, Clemson and Carolina. He was named to the "Dixie Dozen," an all-star team comprised of the top 12 high school players in the South. Neealess to say, he was an All-State selection. Manning is the first Negro to sign a basketball grant-in aid with the Gamecocks, which poses a prob!em. The Charlie Scott incident last February is still fixed in the minds of many. How will the USC student body react to having a Negro play for their beloved Alma Mater? Will they call him "nigger," toss pennies and make him feel uncomfortable in every imaginab!e way, or will they respect him for what he is -an outstanding athlete and a member of the Carolina Community? If USC wants big-time basketball, they must be willing to accept big-time basketball players. Casey Manning is destined for the big-time. Will Carolina students overlook the fact that he is colored so that they might have a big-time basketball squad? Everyone knows that a happy athlete is a good athlete. If.Casey Manning is welcomed into the Carolina Community' with open arms and made to feel at home, Casey Manning will be happy. Only time will tell. This is a crucial stage in the develop ment of USC's athletic program. How USC will react to Casey Manning will determine whether or not other Negro athletes will play for Carolina. Only time will tell.
