Against MIT April 2 the Game cocks lost only one of the nine in dividual matches. Happ Lathrop, Richard Tinsley, Johnny Dennis, Wade Mayo, Ronnie Smoak, Max Poteet, Jim H a w k i n s and Earl Pruet all recorded wins over the hapless crew from Massachusetts. Earl Pruet fired a 69 to take medalist i o n o r s. Hawkins and Mayo had a 71 and a 72. In the Virginia match Johnny lennis lost the o n l y individual match of the (lay for the golfing Gamecocks as they topped the Cav aliers, 17-4. Number two man Tins ley had the low score of the (lay, a two-under-par 70. Mayo shot a 72 and Lathrop carded a 73. Manning Inks Basketball Scholarship The U S C athletic department has announced the signing of Dil lon's Casey Manning to a basket ball grant-in-aid. Manning, a 6-2 guard, averaged over 34 points per game in leading his team to a 23-3 record and the state AAA title. His top output was a 62-point effort against Mc Coll last year. Against Georgia Southern in a seven inning affair USC scored three runs in the first and added runs in the third and seventh. Fratern Past Ini By PHILIP HINSON Staff Writer The fraternity all-stars staved off a furious fourth quarter come from-behind attempt by the inde pendent all-stars to win a 63-62 verdict. The contest saw the fra ternity men steadily build a lead in the first three quarters, and it proved to be their margin of vic tory as the independents outscored them 22-15 in the last period. The independents relied heavily on the scoring of Zone 13's Bob C.:wartacky in the last quarter as he displayed the form that gave him the scoring championship. After leading 18-14 at the end of the first quarter, the fraternity men scored eight straight points to pad their margin. Blatt missed his shot, but a Zone 18 man jumped into the lane too soon and Blatt got another chance. He hit. Zone 18 came downcourt, Camp. bell put up a j u mp ash ot that missed, and three subsequent taps also refused to drop. Tommy Gar yin finally cleared the rebound for KA and hurled a long pass upcourt to Blatt. Blatt hit the layup to ice the game. Garvin and Blatt led the KA of. fense with 17 and 15 points. Stein and Doug Fisher w e r e tied for Zone 18 scoring honors with 14 each. KA took an early lead in the first quarter, but Zone 18 came back to tie the count at 24.24 with three minutes left in the half. In the third quarter the frater nity men maintained their eight point lead with a 48-40 third quar ter advantage. Czwartacky scored his first point of the game with about two m i n u t e s left in the quarter. Then, in the f o u r t h quarter Czwartacky came to life. The slen der guard scored 16 of his team's 22 fourth quarter points and al most single-handedly brought them back. He opened the fourth quarter with a long outside shot. Then, after a Terry Campbell basket, he scored two straight over the-head fast break b a s k e t s to one 18 ions hip Light crept inside for a three-point play andl then converted another free throw as KA was called for a technical foul. Light then got another basket inside to put Zone 18 up by four, 45.41. KA pulled back to within one on a Whit Moore jump shot that made it 48-47. Zone 18 lost control of a jump ball, Workman hit a jump shot, KA intercepted a pass under neath and Garvin tapped in a Blatt misfire to put KA into a lead they never lost. KA had to outscramble their big ger opponents under the boards and kept Zone 18 from getting the ball inside to Light and Fisher throughout most of the game. Campbell had 10 points for the losers, Light had 13, Doc Malloy got six and John Fisher had two. For KA Danny Workman had 13, Moore had 10 and Merritt got six. John Roche and Bob Cremins were on hand to present the trophies. Rugby Team In Tourney The USC ruby team will travel to D)uke University May 3, 4 for the Sevens' Tournament. Carolina, as well as other com peting schools, will be allowed several teams of seven members each. Two of the miniature teams start the competition, and the winner of the match faces another team of seven. This procedure continues until all teams have played and a winner is selected. Then, with 1:30 left, Czwartacky picked up his fourth foul and Blatt again converted to put his team up 61-60. Czwartacky again put his team ahead 62-61. G r e g g Blatt once again went to the foul line and his two foul shots concluded the scor ing at 63-62. In the last 20 seconds Bobby Heald stole the ball twice and the independents could not get a basket. Johnny Gregory, w h o coached the fraternity men, pointed to the foul shooting of Gregg Blatt and the defense Bobby Heald as keys to the victory. The game concluded the intra mural basketball program. T o mi Webb, intramural director, said that he was pleased with the par ticipaution and enthusiasm shown this season and felt that this sea son was one of the best ever. K A,R ider, 1 93-51 Thinclads In Third I The USC track t e a m topped Duke in their third dual meet of the season Monday, putting their record at 2-1 for the season. The thinclads piled up a larg lead in the field events and took the contest, 93-51. Netters Compile 11-1 Record The Carolina tennis team took five of six matches in eight days to push their season's record to 11-1. In their last outing the netters beat the Ivy League's Columbia University, 8-1. Lewis Weisser lost the only match of the day for the Gamecccks. He was beaten 7-5, 8-6. During the eight-day stretch the Gamecocks toppled Duke, Illinois, Toledo, Berea and Columbia and lost to Clemson.
