Tenis Tear After Three By DIANE CLAYPOOLE Asst. Sports Editor The Gamecock netters defeated Tennessee 6-3, Southern Illinois 6-3, and North Carolina State 8-1, to bring their season's record to 4-0. The G a n e c o c k s won all six singles matches against N. C. State Saturday, led by Bobby Heald who swept past the Wolfpack's Porky Byrd, 6.1, 6.0. Jay Schlosser defeated Bill Hunt 6-1, 6-3 in the second singles posi tion and Bill Austin took N. C. State's Griffith 6-3, 7-5. In fourth singles LSC's Henry Ragle went three sets to defeat Jack Blankenhorn, 4.6, 6-3, 6-2. Louis Weisser of Carolina a 1 s o' went three sets to outlast Bunny Coward in a 4-6, 7-5, 6.1 match. Coach1 l1-Clain In doubles play Heald-Schlosser Thinclads Pla Furman Relay I By JOHN DAVID SPADE Staff Writer Carolina's trackmen got a taste of the quality competi tion they'll be facing in the Florida Relays when they ran in the Furman Relays this past weekend. The outdoor season entered the second week for the Gamecocks as they placed in three of the four running events which they entered. The Gamecocks placed second in the sprint medleys, third in the distance medley and fifth in the 440 relay. Gary Zemel placed fifth in the shot. Tony Callander grabbed a third in the high jump. In the distance medley, Paul Derrick ran the 880 leg, Sammy Gibson ran the quarter, Dave Peddie ran the three quarters and Algis Sinmms ran the mile anchor. Jim Gee led off the sprint medley with a 220, Mike Purin toji followed with a 220, Bobby Howe then ran the 440 and Bob Kaczka finished with an 880. "Southern Illinois is a good hard surface team, and I was worried but after we won the four singles matches I knew we would win," continued McClain. Intramural Tournament Starts Tonight The Intramural Basketball Toir nament will begin tonight in the Old Gym with the top four teams in each division playing for the campus championship. In the first game tonight Zone 18, undefeated in the regular sea son, will play Zone 13. Game time is 5 p.m. In the second game at 6:30 unbeaten Sigma Nu will play Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and at 8 Zone 17 will play Zone 3. Pi Kappa Alpha will play unbeaten Kappa Alpha in the last game at 9:30.
