"Great Scott !" The Charlotte Coliseum crowd chanted as Charlie Scott, UNC All-America and Olympic star, stood on the foul line about to complete a three-point play to put the Tar Heels ahead of Duke, 78-70 in the waning minutes of their come back win for the ACC Championship. "Great" may have been too mild an adjective. Some 12 minutes earlier, Duke had led by 11 points. Tar Heel guard Dick Grubar was on the bench with an injured leg. Forward Bill Bunting had three fouls. Center Rusty Clark and guard Eddie Fogler were having miserable games. With the scene set for the upset of the year, Charlie Scott went wild. He picked the Tar Heels up off the Coliseum floor and threw them into the NCAA Eastern Regionals. He took all of four minutes pulling the Tar Heels to within four points, 55-51. Lee Dedmon got a three-point play while Scott was preparing his next act. Two steals and two Scott layups later the Tar Heels were ahead, 58-56, for the first time since midway in the first half. The Blue Devils pulled to within one. Scott hit a jump shot. Scott stole the ball and hit a layup. Scott hit another jump shot. With 5:47 left UNC went in their four-corner offense. Scott ran around the Blue Devil defense as if he didn't even know they were there, slipped down the lane like a cat, stuck in another layup and walked to the foul line to cash in the results of a Randy Denton foul on the play. "Great Scott !" "Great Scott !" It was a performance the Coliseum crowd won't soon forget. It may be the greatest 20 minutes of basketball any body ever played. Scott had 28 points in the half to finish the night with 40. He hit 12 of 13 from the floor. The one he missed was partially deflected. Scott had never played well in the Charlotte Coliseum before. He made up for it in 20 minutes and the crowd loved it. For 20 minutes Scott was a beautiful basketball player. As Scott raced downcourt toward the go-ahead basket, he patted his stolen basketball on the floor and almost laughed. Charlie Scott was a kid on Christmas morning, having the time of his life. It came as no surprise to anyone that S~cott was selected the most valuable player in the tourna mecnt. The Tar Heels had their chins on the floor and D)uke was ibout to grind them farther down.
