Reed & I SILVER C COMPE See the c< Reed & Barton coll those of other fain Graffiti IL Men's Ro By CHUCK KEEFER Staff Writer There are volumes of evidence around the Carolina scene t h a t mysterious handwriting on the wall was in no .way confined to the civilization of ancient Egypt in the day of Moses. True, the literary quality of the message may have lost something in translation to modern English, but t h e media remains. This by no means heaven-sent phenomenon seems to be highly selective in its occurrence. It is primarily confined to the beige walls of the men's restrooms. There was a theory expounded by a local sage that the quality and content of t h i s mysterious writing would be in direct relation to the location of the restroom. i Air umander, and Hendy Powell, were introduced at the Silver ieak' Here SCULPTURE EXHIBIT The "National Sculpture Exhibi tion '69" is now accepting entries for this year's program. Sponsored by t h e Southern Association of Sculptors, the program w i Il be shown at eight different galleries and m u s e u m s throughout the Southeast. Information may be ob. tained from Howard Woody of the art department. Photographs of entries must be mailed to Woody by May 6. It seems that, in many cases, not only is the same message related over the length and breadth of the campus, but the style of writing and the absence of literary pretension is universal. The message itself will not be related in this article because it would show a certain lack of taste. However, as one oracle put it (also on a wall), "Some people have very little else on their minds." On the lighter side, it seems that campus humor and satire is also made manifest across the plaster. For example, in the restroom on the third floor of the R u s s e I House, a veritable gold mine for t h e graffiti hunter, a scrawled s'gn above one of the commodes labeled it "the original sit-in." Also found in the archives were the seemingly esoteric messages "Che Lives" and "Custer died for our sins." Someone obviously practic ing for a future career in adver tising left the legend. Persons visiting the restroom in the basement of Davis are advised, this time with a felt pen, that the University does not allow swim ming in fixtures obviously placed there for other purposes. Under t h i s prohibition an anonymous critic has posed the question, "How about wading?" In the first floor restroom of Hamilton lies the earthy moral "There are two reasons why I like women-Raquel Welch." As a final example, a restroom in the beautiful new Humanities Center boasts the inscription "if you lived here, you would be home by now." According to informed sources among the females of the species, there is a total absence of social comment or any other comment, on the walls of their similar facili ties. This leads us to believe that either they have spotlessly clean valls or that they steadfastly re fuse to admit that they haven't. The Blossomn Shop F LO RIST S Devine and Saluda A Well.
