The Gamnecocks were involved in a hotly contestedl battle for second place with North Carolina and Maryland, losing to the Tar Heels: when the points were finally tal lied. N. C. State won the confer ence crown for the fourth straight year, winning all but two of the. events andl compiling an over whelming 584 points. Following UNC with 36;3 points and USC with 843 were Maryland (328), Virginia (841), Wake For est (83), l)uke (77) and Clemson (21). N. C. State freshmen John Long and Tom Evans were the high-point men at the meet. Long won three firsts and Evans captured two firsts and a second. This was the last meet for seniors Mike Slenker, Covie Stanwick and Vic Laughlin. Skenker, however, will partici pate in the NCAA meet along with teammate Jim Weinzettel and possibly a few other USC tankers. According to swimmer George Fairey, the AGO meet was run well, but the only problem was with a new electronic timer an(l finish judlge. Fairey Saidl three backstrokers in the meet, including USC's Paul Lewis, were dlisquali fied because they did not touch a certain "plate" har(d enough at the end of their races, resulting in their times not even being re corded. The Wolfpack, applying a combination of sheer aggres diveness and muscle embellished by some rather questionable e's decisions, were able to outlast Frank McGuire's visibly ressed Gamecocks. This is not to say that there was only one beneficiary of ;he officiating, but the consistency with which the fouls Nere called-particularly the touch fouls levied on the Game -ocks' Bobby Cremins-left much to be desired. As McGuire painfully and angrily admitted after the .ontest, "If there's any loose officiating we simply can't ;vin-we don't have the bodies." State was able to capitalize on the repeated USC fouls ind chip away at the Gamecocks' lead until a three-point play by State's Rick Anheuser at 5:32 put the Pack out in rront, 57-54. John Roche and State's Vann Williford then exchanged jump shots, but Anheuser and soph Jim Risinger increased the Wolfpack lead to 63-58 with a little more than two inutes remaining. Then at 1:51 Cremins fouled out and for USC that was the beginning of the end. Despite a clutch steal by John Ribock followed by a bucket and then a Tom Owens' tip that tied it with 25 seconds remaining, the tide had long since turned for State. Dick Braucher converted with three seconds left on the clock to win it and the subsequent foul called on Billy Walsh was only an anti-climax. The game itself was a well-played affair and both teams were a tribute to their coaches. For the Gamecocks. Tom Owens played one of his most brilliant games to date, vir tually ruling supreme under the boards, pulling down 18 re bounds, blocking shots and putting in some key tip-ins. Billy Walsh provided his usual clutch outside sharp shooting to keep Carolina in the ball game in the first period when Roche was being heavily covered. Nevertheless a loss is a loss and this one can only be ::onsidered most heartbreaking considering the stakes that were on the line. When asked if the loss would make his team tougher in the tournament McGuire summed up the feelings of all the Gamecock supporters that were on hand: "A loss never helps you. We play them all one at a time and if these kids weren't ready to play then I did a poor job of coaching." The kids were indeed ready and they proved it, but the pressure of the long season for only five men has also got to be taking its toll.
