Roch( USc By JIM HANEY Sports Editor Coach Frank McGuire called it "one of the toughest tests we've had." He was discussing the Furman game as he sat in a small bare room of tables and chairs under the court area of the Greenville Memorial Auditorium. McGuire appeared unruffled and it was hardly evident that his 11th-ranked Gamecocks had been in jeopardy of losing to the Furman Paladins only moments before. With the Gamecocks ahead 48-47 and John Ribock settling into his Boxing Team To Present Fights Tonight The Columbia Boxing T e a m, made up entirely of Carolina stu dents, will hold exhibition matches tonight at 7:30 at the Youth Me morial Center. TODAY-. 1:15.32.5- 7.9O Leac 3iddie seat on the bench after leaving the game with his fifth foul, the Furman crowd, at sellout propor tions for the first time this sea son, was beginning to sense an upset. Billy Walsh dampened the crowd's hopes with a jump shot from the side, John Roche drove in for another two points, Tom Owens tapped in a stray shot and the score was 54-47. The Furman crowd stopped dreaming. The rest of the game was a tiresome parade between the foul lines, interrupted only long enough for Walsh and Dick Esleeck to trade jump shots and for Joe Brunson to stick in an easy layup. McGuire called the 63-53 win "a great basketball game." "I never saw a better game played against us," he added. He then explained that the Pala dins had forced Carolina out of their zone defense into a man-to man early in the game and made the Gamecocks play their (Fur man's) game. "They did every thing but win the game," he said. The Paladins began the game with a near freeze, waiting almost three minutes before taking their first shot. When the Gamecocks came out after them they moved 6-6 Brunson out into a high post, trying to set picks and shake men loose driving for the basket. Esleeck did 24 points worth of damage for the night, 12 in each half, to lead the Paladins. Brun son had 12 points and 16 rebounds. Roche led Carolina with 27 points. Walsh had 14. Owens had 13 points and 18 rebounds. Furman's record now stands at 8-16. The Gamecocks are 18-3 overall.
