The pancake and sausage dinner will be open to all USC students and the public. The cost is 50 cents for all you can eat and drink. The history of this event dates back to England in 1445 when "shriving cakes" were used as re ligious symbols on the last day before Lent. The tradition has been kept over the years with many variations. Today Shrove Tuesday is set as the day for the annual pancake races between women. In this race, each of the women must hold out a heavy iron griddle and flip the pancake as she runs. BRING WILLIAM BUC< William Buckley has agre Americans for freedom c most new members. They appear dead or in the process of dying over a monotonous but beautiful I beach which according to the script is in Peru, but according to the credits is somewhere in southern Spain. The birds are supposed to i go there to die, but what are all i those French people doing there? i Could it be to die too? Not really; but the characters' analogies to the birds is pushed a little too far. Jean Seberg, dressed like a blue parakeet, and Danielle Darrieux, like an old parrot, have a scene together in which they actually call each other "my dear little bird." If anybody sees THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE and happens to like it, please let me know, because I can see no reason at all to put that thing on a screen. This movie could have been called "How I Won The War-Victorian Style." Like its predecessor, it is a witless spoof on war which uses that old academic formula of so cial satire to the nth power to show the seriousness of a conflict. It doesn't work because today's audience either knows exactly the seriousness of futile wars, or if it is too unsensitive to grasp it from reality, it would definitely miss the whole point of the movie. A lot of good British people put their time and money on this thing, but I would advise you not to do the same. rtainment Council in 1968 as a non-profit organiza tion. "I realize there has been adverse criticism to NEC," Phillips said, "but the student body should real ize that it will benefit from NEC." "In the future we hope to avoid such incidents as the Four Tops cancellation. The NEC has already made an effect: the Rascals who were not on a southern tour, would not have come to USC had it not been for the NEC," he added. Operating on a budget of $30,000 for 1969, the NEC expects to dou ble or triple that figure in 1970. Membership h a s increased so rapidly that NEC is now in the process of hiring a full-time staff. Its increasing power as a student organization holds promises for USC. NBC's program "Monitor" is interested in doing a special program on the council. One of the major networks has also ex pressed interest in broadcasting a regular student forum program through NEC and USC, and a na tionwide television show. As funds increase, NEC plans to broaden its interests into many other phases of student life. Plans are being developed for student discount cards for motels and trav eling. Also in consideration is the formation of entertainment schol arships which would attract more young people into the field. :LEY TO USC CAMPUSI ed to speak to the Young hapter which recruits the U.S.C. A newly formed student com mittee has a scheduled meeting with the Board of Trustees Feb. 26 to discuss student programs which concern the board. SGA plans to continue the Met ropolitan Education Foundation. Salane said that "this foundation is one of the reasons Columbia was named as a finalist for the All American City award." He added t h a t student speakers are now working in the area of public rela tions. These speakers go to high schools and civic clubs and talk about college. Through questions directed to high school students on the relevance of college, and "Why USC?" they hope to attract more in-state students to Carolina. Salane also stated that S G A hopes to line up more speakers for the Great Issues Program. John Kenneth Galbraith is scheduled to speak at USC this semester. "All the programs that h a v e been undertaken have been suc cessful," said Salane. The boys were allowed to sign up for rooms on the floor according to their GPR at mid-term fall semester. The rooms have telephones and there is wall to wall carpet. The cost is $155 per semester. Although the boys enjoy no spe cial privileges, they agree that liv ing on the floor is more conducive to study than in other dorms. The concensus is that the boys on the hall are quieter and more consid erate. The report listed "Geography 501, a course for juniors, seniors and graduate students on the eco nomic development and urbaniza tion of Africa" as the USC con tribution to the field. "The University of South Caro lina also plans to establish in addi tion a Language and Area Center for studies of Africa south of the Sahara," the report continued. "I read that with a great deal of interest," commented H. Willard Davis, vice president for academic affairs. "All I have heard (of the area center) is what I read in the pa. per," he added. Davis also said that the geography course is Geography 428, not 501. Last year the faculty approved the institution of History 646, "The N e g r o in American History." Davis described it as a cultural, economic and political study of the Negro in the U. S. from slavery to the present.
