She, Robbie Payne, Karen B a n o v, Julia Henderson, Ann Hasty and Robert Folks, all his tory majors, earned 15 hours credit by their work, and im measurable benefits from the so cial and sightseeing aspects of their stay. All six students were particu larly impressed with the academic system at Warwick. "The empha sis is on student-tutor exchange of ideas, the student writing es says on selected topics, and then discussing them in two-hour semi nars with the tutor," explained Payne. "We wrote two or three ,essays for each course, the ma terial coming entirely from our own independent research. No such thing as tests." "I think the greatest value of study there is that you're taught to read and to write critically," Miss Henderson reflected. "The professors I had were so dynamic," Miss H a y e s said. "Their enthusiasm would just dif fuse through the whole class. We were free, we could say exactly what we wanted to, yet the pro fessor controlled the discussion. I think the secret is small classes. Mine averaged ab)out seven peo ple to a class." Miss Banov agreed. "The aca dlemic andl personal freedom al lowed us to dlevelop as indlividuals -there's no starched conformity." "We had lectures only three or four times a week, each averaging only about one hour. Even though we usedl a prtygood bit of time in reading, this still left us a lot ENTRO Men's Hairstyling ng (Across from Tapp's) 254-5594 ents GHT 6-9 p.m. the Orient $3.50 is,ease. Spare time provided some of the more memorable moments of the visit. The group started at Edin burgh, Scotland, and the itinerary (mostly by hitchhiking) included Oxford, Stratford, the Lake Dis trict, London and Stonehenge. Everyone also managed to see some of the Continent-France, Germany, Switzerland. Said Miss Banov, "I especially enjoyed living with an Austrian family for a while and skiing on those beautiful slopes." Back at Warwick, the group found plenty to do. "They culti vate so many different interests at the school, from mountain climbing to jazz," Payne said. "Practically everybody on campus joins one or two societies, most of them political." Payne and Folks agreed that the notion of the Englishman's stiff upper lip is not necessarily so, but "there's difficulty in be The Blossomn Shop FLORIST S Devine and Saluda F'IVEl POlITS ' Phot* by Chkf Photographer Warem Hudson d Saturday with the rushees r bids. "You have to make the first overture yourself, but after that, you can make really close friends. The kids over there spend a lot of their spare time teaching children from India to speak Eng lish. Others work with retarded children. They're really great," Miss Hayes said. Social life can be found easily. "The main social scenes are the campus bars," Payne said. "We never saw any drunken rowdiness in the Union buildings at any time, though," Folks added. In London, the group visited pubs, where customers are enter tained by guitar players. "There are no discotheques in London the pub's about as close to one as you can get."
