Two Qu Swim ( BY BRUCE HONICK Staff Writer Two members of USC's swim ming team have qualified for the NCAA Swimming and D i v i n g 1%ampionships to be held at the University of I n d i a n a in late March. Senior Mike Slenker and sopho more Jim Wienzettel both have re corded times equal to or below the listed qualifying times in their best events to earn the right to partici pate in the prestigious meet in Bloomington, Ind. Slenker, a 6'4 freestyler from Allentown, Pa., will swim the 50 yard freestyle, having equalled the qualifying time of 21.7 seconds. Tagged "Slink" by his team mates, this swimming Gamecock at tends USC on a grant-in-aid, and was a 1968 ACC finalist in the 100-yard butterfly and 50-y a r d freestyle. He holds the school rec ord in both of these events, and also is a member of two record holding relays. This 193-pound geology major, when asked about his feelings con cerning the honor of going to the NCAA's, said, "Getting in the top twelve in the nation means you're an All-American, and that's what I'm trying for." He also pointed out t h a t the NCAA meet will be his last before he becomes ineligible for competi tion, and that he wants to make a good showing. Jim Wienzettel, the other Caro lina ace going to the m e e t in Bloomington, qualified in the 100 yard breaststroke, and "possibly the 200." His time in the 100 was 1:01:1, well below the qualifying mark of 102.3. The 6-6 tanker is from Savan nah, Ga. and attends USC on a g r a n t-i n-a i d. "Wino," as he is called by the other Carolina swim mers, was a 1968 ACC finalist in both the 100 and 200 yard breast stroke. This swimming ace is majoring in business. He has swum competi tively for only "four or five years," USC Bt BY DAN PARLER Staff Writer The Gamecock baseball t e a m, hoping to rebound from a some what dlisappointing s e a s o n last year, began full practice on Feb. 3. According to Coach Jackie Pow ers, the team has gone throughI two good1 workouts, which hi a v e been marked by a lot of enthu siasm. The 1969 Gamecocks will field a team with a mixture of youth and experience. Heading the list of returners are seniors Billy Cash, an All-ACC selection last year, and Wally Jones, who hit .284 last year. Other returning starters are Bud dy Caldwell, and Butch Anderson, as well as pitchers Jim Smith, Joe Iamd, and Bill Beitmecier. The infield seems to be set with Cash at first base, Jones at sec ond, Anderson at third, sophomore Gary Lance at shortstop, and Cald well behind the plate. Lance has the job of All-ACC shortstop Toy McCord who passedl up his senior year to sign with the California Angels. Coach Powers is not sure who will make up his starting outfield. Both Bloomington-bound swim mers have no complaints about the USC swimming p r o g r a m, head coached by Pete C o m b e s. They point out, however, that this year's squad has little depth. Both aces Swimmer Deacons, BY BRUCE H1ONICK Staff Writer Carolina's swimming Gamecocks churned the water fast and furi ously Saturday afternoon to defeat Wake Forest, 65-41 at the USC Natatorium. The Demon Deacons were never in contention as the talent-laden wetbacks of Carolina captured the majority of events. The only double winner for USC was sophomore diver Mike May field. The 5'9 Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native won both the one and three meter (living everts. Although USC waa experiencing a long losing streak prior to their meeting with Wake, they were in high spirits Saturday, confidence oozing from every pore of their (ripping bodies. Humorous antics by a USC relay team, who imitated a basketball team's introduction when t h e i r names were called by the meet an nouncer, livened up th meet. Surprises were many, but espe cially when two Carolina a c e s sprinted the first two legs of the 500-yard freestyle event. S o m e thing like this just isn't done as a rule, the event being so gruelling. Highlight of the Saturday con test was Vic Laughlin's record setting performance in the three meter diving event. Hie shattered his own mark of 312.15 by totaling 312.85 points to set a new USC record. Other Carolina winners against Wake Forest were Covey Stanwick in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.6) iseball Junior Don Stanley has advanced beyond others and appears to have a position in left field. The center- field w'ill be manned by either Terry Floyd, a junior-, or D)onnie Churchwell, a sophlo more. J u n i o r' Guy Eargle, and sophomor-e Ronnie F u I m e r are presently the forerunners for the r-ight field position. The Gamecocks will play a 35 game schedule, which includes a, spring tour in April when the team will play six games in five days. Included in the schedule are 21 conference games. F Sports bill By BILL MADDEN Bobby Cremins gets the nomination here for this year's "Charlie Hustle" award. Don't be deluded by Bobby's low point total of the past few games. He continues to confound the opposition by averaging close to 10 rebounds a game-a feat that 6-2 guards just aren't deemed capable of perform ing. A fitting reward would be for Bobby to hustle his wr onto the "All-ACC" starting five. Reminder to Frank McGuire: ACC commissioner Jim Weaver is in the hospital-don't forget to send him a "get well soon" card. As Carolina's box scores continue to resemble bowling lineups with just the starting five getting print, it should not be overlooked that there's a pretty fine number six P,an who could probably start for most other schools. V That would be Charlie "Hatchetman" Vacca, who, when he plays, plays like a man possessed. Or maybe just a man staking his claim on a position next season after the fresh man onslaught. Regardless, the bet here is that Charlie need not worry. He's done the job and done it well. His uncanny ability to come off the bench, draw fouls, keep the opposition honest, and provide a win ning spark can not help but prove invaluable to Coach McGuire next season, when combined with Charlie's experience. Yes, Virginia, that really is Jack Thompson selling Cadillacs at Jim Moore's on Main Street. Methinks that with the advent of long playing record albums to commemorate 4-6 football seasons, i.e., Bob Ful ton's "Total Excitement," that perhaps next year should USC footballers turn out a winning season, a motion picture might be in order-with Otto Preminger to direct maybe? Ninth ranked LaSalle is still sporting only one loss on its record-that being to some "other team receiving votes." Apparently "Basketball Weekly," the authority of college and pro basketball, takes little stock in the AP and UPI polls. They have consistently rated South Carolina in the top 20-sometimes as high as 15th. Not to bring up a sore subject again, but when are our cheerleaders going to get the message that their messag isn't getting across. It's a sad commentary on organized cheerleading when a packed house of 13,000 fans is almost totally unresponsive to the same five or six tired cheers. Something's gotta go.
