Owens Romp BY STEVE CRICK Staff Writer It was Tom Owens' n i g h t in Carolina Coliseum as the big for ward led Carolina's Gamecocks to a convincing 90-67 win over Fur man's hapless Paladins. Owens equaled his career high of 31 points while capturing 19 re bounds to take top honors in both categories for the two teams. Caarles Selvy was high point man for the lackluster Paladins with 18 points and Joe Brunson retrieved the most rebounds, 14. Prior to this game, Furman's Dick Esleeck was considered the primary threat in the Paladin's of fense. But Gamecock captain Bob Cremins put the silencer on Fur man's big gun and held Esleeck to a paltry 15 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Neither team appeared to be too concerned with each other when the evening began. Both squads experienced some difficulty in scor ing; the count was tied 2-2 at the 18:38 mark. Furman used a 1-3-1 offense and defense trying to s h u t off USC's big men who were close to the basket, but the Gamecocks' superior height and rebounding strength allowed Carolina to con tml both backboards throughout most of the game. Carolina also managed to get its rarely seen fast break moving late in the first period. Three quick steals, two by Walsh and one by Roche in the final minute of first half play, gave Carolina a 40-29 edge over the bewildered Paladins. USC immediately took charge Riker-Led Biddies Roll, 81-58 After a shaky first half the USC Biddies, behind the scoring and rebounding of Tom Riker, came on strong in the second half to defeat the Furman freshmen, 81-58. With starters Bob Carver and Rick Adylette on the bench with four fouls each, Riker and Billy Grimes led the Biddies to a sub stantial second half lead. The first half was clo s e as neither team was able to gain a commanding lead. F u r m a n did manage to get a five point lead at 28-23, but Riker and Carver brought the Biddies back to a 36-32 halftime advantage. Riker was the game's high scor er with 31 points. Bob Carver was next with 19 and Grimes chipped in 12, most of them in the second half. High man for Furman was Steve Pigman with 24. Riker also led both teams in rebounding with 19. David Jenkins came off the bench to gather in 9 rebounds, second high for the game. 2 For 1 Plus $1 Suits Sport Jackets Slacks Sweaters shirts 4 for,$18.00 BRITTON'S 1337 MAIN STREET Leads Dver PA at the second half's beginning by scoring four straight points before the Paladins called time out.
