'Cocks Hi
To Duke,
BY JIM HANEY
Sports Editor
The Gamecocks will travel to
Durham tomorrow for a rematch
against the Duke Blue Devils, who
will be out to avenge a 64-57 set
back dealt to them by Carolina last
Saturday.
The Blue Devils have lost the
last three games with the Game
cocks, losing both battles last year.
Duke coach Vic Bubas cited the
Gamecocks' rebounding as a ma
jor factor in the Blue Devils' fall
Saturday. Carolina beat Duke on
the boards 42-34 with Toni Owens
picking off 21 misfires.
Duke did not use a pressing de
fense against the Gamecocks in the
first game although they h a v e
used the press effectively at times
this year.
The Gamecocks have run into
trouble against a press only once
this season. That was in the Flor
ida State game.
The game should feature two
good individual matchups. Owens
will be out to win another round
against Duke's 6-10 center Randy
Denton. Owens heat Denton on the
boards 21-13 last Saturday.
Blue Devil guard Dave Golden
will probably draw the assignment
of stopping high scoring J o h n
Roche. Golden held Roche to 1'
points in the first game and kept
Roche from driving the baseline
most of the afternoon.
The Gamecocks are likely to
stick with the three-two zone de
fense they have used all year. They
were fairly effective in keeping
Duke away from the basket in the
teams' first meeting.
The Gamecocks will be on the

road again Monday night as they
journey to Clemson to play the
Tigers. USC took the first game
between the two 77-62.
In the first game Clemson began
the game with a zone defense cal
culated to keep Ribock and Owens
away from the basket as much as
possible, but the Gamecocks were
able to hit from outside enough to
force Clemson into a man-to-man
in the second half.
The 'Cocks held the Tigers' ace
scorer Butch Zatazelo to 16 points
the first match. Zatazelo is current
ly scoring 23.3 points per game
and near the top of the individual
scoring race in the conferentce.
Clemson won its first ACC vic
tory Saturday night as they upset
N. C. State 78-77. Zatazelo pnmped
in 34 points to lead the Tigers'
offensive efforts.
Clemson will play Florida State
tonight at Clemson.
The Gamecocks have a secure
hold on second place in the confer
ence behind the pacesetting UNC
Tar Heels. Duke is stuck in sixth
place in the conference. Clemson.

Carolina's freshman basketball
team pushed their season record to
10-1 with an 83-75 win over the
Citadel freshmen Monday night.
The Biddies, coached by Donnie
Walsh, received their only loss at
the hands of the Davidson Wild
kittens in the Charlotte Coliseum.
Since then they have rolled up five
straight wins.
Center Tom Riker is leading the
Biddies' offense with a scoring
average of 23.9 points per game
and is pulling down rebounds at
a 18.3 clip.
"Riker has lived up to every bit
of our expectations," Walsh said.
"He's (lone everything we've asked
him to do, and lie's jelled well with
the other boys," Walsh continued.
Riker's best night thus far caine
against the Georgia Southern
freshmen last Saturday afternoon
when he scored 37 points and cap
tured 24 rebounds in the Biddies'
85-68 win.
Guard Bob Carver, the team's
floor leader, is second to Riker in
the scoring department, hitting the
basket at a 14.3 rate. lie had 25
points to lead the Biddies in their
loss to Davidson.
Forward Billy Grimes is the Bid
(lies' third leading scorer with a
14.3 game average. Grimes had a
season high of 28 points in the
first victory over the Citadel fresh
men, 74-68, Jan. 13.
Commenting on his team's over
all performance Walsh stated, "I'm
very pleased with the team. At one
point we had six games in 10 days.

Games Sellout
The Carolina Coliseum has seen
only one night this season that did
not have a sellout crowd for a
USC basketball game.
The Erskine game, Jan. 14, drew
a crowd of only 10,633. That game
was the night before exams began.
The top attendance thus far was
12,201 for last Saturday's game
with Duke.

When asked about his team's
style of play, W a l s h answered,
"We're trying to get them to run

on the team we're playing and

lie then explained that in an
away game a hostile crowd will
tend to excite a team that runs a
lot and at times cause them to
make mistakes and lose the ball.
The Biddies' next game is
against the Clemson freshmen at
Clemson Feb. 10. The Biddies won
the first encounter 79-52.
