The announcement was m a d e Former Stellars To Play BY JOHN DAVID SPADE Sports Editor USC fans will have a chance to see three former Carolina greats next Thursday in the Coliseum. Jim Fox and Gary Gregor will team up with their Phoenix team mates to play Skip Harlicka and the Atlanta Hawks in a regular NBA game. 'Horsemen' Gregor and Harlicka made up half of the "Four Horsemen" of last year. Fox finished up at USC in '65, Frank McGuire's first year here as head basketball coach. Fox had played previously in Europe, as Frank Standard, an other senior at USC last year, is doing now. Gregor Gregor, a 6-7, 220 pounder, was the first-round draft choice of the Phoenix Suns after his college ca reer ended. Gregor has started all but seven of the Suns' first 38 games at for ward. He was second in scoring for the Gamecocks last year. Har licka was first. Harlicka Harlicka was also a first-round draft choice with the Hawks. The Atlanta club has been the surprise of the NBA season and are threat ening the Baltimore Bullets for the lead in their division. The Suns are in the role of an expansion club and are sitting at the bottom of their division. Suns The leading scorer for the Suns, I)ick Van Arsdale, has been se lected to be a member of the NBA All-Star team. Gregor has said that the style of play in the pros is much like the type of basketball he played here at Carolina, a free lance sort of p)lay. "It's a wonderful thing for Co. lumbia, the state of South Caro lina and it's a tremendous boost to our basketball program at Ciro lina," said Coach Frank McGuire. The news came from Athletic Director Paul Dietzel, who is at tending t h e convention of t h e NCAA in Los Angeles. The Eastern Regionals pair the top te- 's from the ACC, Southern Confert ice, and two other teams from the East. Not only will being host give many people from out of state a chance to see the program at Caro lina, but will also give home fans a chance to see some of the top teams in the nation in action. "It gives one a great feeling about everything for the future. The decision by the NCAA is a continuation of the 'forward look' at South Carolina," added Mc Guire. That "forward look" has come early this year as the Gamecocks are among the leaders in the ACC as well as winners of the Quaker City Tournament. In that tourney, USC upset 1 ith ranked LaSalle, but the pollsters seemed to have ignored that and LaSalle has not slipped in the rankings. Many had expected to see the Gamecocks break into the top 20 in the nation as a result of their fine play, with four sophomores and a junior going most of the way most of the time. But their hopes fell as the Asso ciated Press announced the results of their poll Tuesday. The Game cocks received mention, but were not ranked. Of Carolina's two losses (out come of the Maryland game not included) one was to number six Davidson by five p o i n t s. The Gamecocks were in the game all the way, and may have come out as winners in the extra-curricular activities. Their other loss came at the hands of Virginia.
