Dr. Baldev Raj of Delhi, India, nay help find a way to feed the vorld's hungering masses as a re ult of his research in peeling to natoes-one cell at a time. Raj, an assistant professor at he University of Delhi, is a post loctoral fellow in the Department of Biology at USC. lie and his colleague, Dr. John 4. Herr, are investigating plant -eproduction by first stripping an ndividual cell of its wall using a ligestive enzyme and then trying o sustain it in a synthetic envir nment taking the place of soil. Their goal: to produce a "full. ledged" plant from a single cell n a test tube. Once the cell is stripped, Raj ex >lained, it is introduced into the lesired medium in an otherwise terile environment. Though the ideal control medium tas not been discovered yet, the Zaj-Herr team has managed to -ee) a de-walled cell alive as long ts 21 (lays.
