Crick's observations will be continued in Friday's issue. Carolina basketball during this past Christmas season has been an escape from all laws of prob ability. It goes like this: first, the Gamecocks must be declared true underdogs on three out of four road games. Second, they lose only one and beat all the prognosticators by taking three of them; and third, they win with such poise, finesse and verve to cause sportswriters, newscasters and even Bob Fulton to take notice of what a truly great coach can do with a group of scrappy young gentlemen repre senting South Carolina. It all began on a cold winter Wednesday in USC's "Indoor Pal ace" where the Gamecocks turned the tables on a surprising East Carolina team by sinking the Pi rates 75-61. Though only leading 30-29 at the half, the 'Cocks roared back with a a e c o n d half blitz that stunned East Carolina into crucial errors and fouls after the Pirates had played almost flawless basket ball during the first half. USC's first true tea of the sea son was held in Charlotte's revered coliseum, Davidson's home-away from-home stomping grounds. It's interesting to note that sel dom does USC win at Charlotte. Carolina always seems to lose by one way or another, and this year's Davidson game was not an excep tion. The Gamecocks started off play ing control basketball and kept the tempo of the game subdued throughout the first half. It was apparent in the early going that USC was determined not to get into foul trouble and that Carolina wasn't going to run and shoot with Davidson as other teams had un successfully tried to do. And the potent Wildcats, with Mike "Leapfrog" Maloy jumping -over the top of the goal, were chomping at the bit trying to run and shoot but to no avail. The score was tied at half time, 24-24, as a nervous, surprised crowd filed out to grab a bite to eat in order to keep their ulcers down. The word "upset" wa on the lips of many a Carolina and Dav idson fan, but the referees re moved all doubt of the outcome .~ early in the second half w h en Carolina's Torn Owen. left the game with his fifth personal. Then, the G a meeo ck s were slapped with a technical foul which the Wildcats madc good. Davidson receivedl the ball out of bounds, scored again and went on to win the game.
