However, when student groups become so involved with ex ternally oriented movements that they have no reason for being, except the reasons set forth by these outside groups, they tend to become only sounding boards for these non-student concerns and the entire idea of academic freedom is held up to scorn. The univ rsity has a responsi bility to each and every student to insure that he be allowed to search out the "truth" for him self. The university also has a responsibility to insure that these endeavors are carried out in an atmosphere indicative of institu tions of higher learning. Nothing constructive can come from wild charges when there is no one there to answer these charges. I find this page quite interesting and even sometimes humorous. But when I find statements such as the following - "I am convinced, however, that the ma jority of bushy manes are some how a communist front, and that dark, devious, dangerous thoughts lurk behind them," they cease to be amusing. Lack of communication be tween people is not a funny thing, it can only breed ignorance and hate. On our campus there is a lack of communication simply because there is a lack of desire to communicate. If the person who wrote the previous statement would take the time to speak with these "bushy manes," perhaps his opin ion might change. Another favorite topic is that of SDS. Many people write, warning us all of this terrible menace within our midst. It seems that they are all ready to die for our country, but they are unwilling to grant certain people the rights they deserve. SDS has many faces, not all function in the way Columbia University's chapter does. There are SDS chapters in almost every major school in this country; per haps it might be better if we tried to listen instead of heckle. I am not a member of AWARE. The type of campus which we are to have is up to the USC student alone. Instead of accepting an( trying to understand things which are new to them, both resort to hate. Since neither are able to under stand "why" SDS and "why" long hair, they find it easier to write t h e m off as communist plots. I think Miss Rich should he more afraid of the U. S. becom ing a police state (i.e., Chicago) than a communist ruin. Mr. Davis should worry more about his own "dark, devious, dangerous thoughts" than why all males (1o not wear their hair short. Bob Dylan made a f i t t i n g statement, I think, when he sang, "Something is happening h e r e and you don't know what it is, do you, Mr. Jones?" The trip will cost $100 plus food and travel expenses to Miami. Transportation to Mtiami for the jet flight can be arrangedi through the Student Union for about $10. Gets Grant With another $231,130) grant from the National Science Foun dat ion, the Department of Mlathe matics now has received more than $2.5 million in such grants. All of the grant money has been usedl to conduct 21 acad(emic year institutes and summer in. stitutes for high school mathe matics teachers. The most recent grant is in two parts, $180,345 for the aca dlemic year institute to begin in September of next year and $50,785 for an institute next summer.
