Carolin Bid For py JOHN DAVID SPADE Sports Editor Frank Howard may be wonder ing why he wanted to play the Gamecocks ten times a year. Coach Paul Dietzel has labeled Aquamen To Open Season The Carolina swimming team will make its opening appearance at East Carolina Dec. 6. "I know what kind of things can happen in a game of this nature, and I wouldn't say a thing like that," said USC's head coach. It turned out that Dietzel was wiser in his statements than How ard who had said that Carolina was the weakest team in the ACC. On the strength of a 73-yard punt return by Tyler Hellams, the Gamecocks held back a stub born Tiger team and won 7-3. Except for Benny Galloway, Saturday was the first win over the Tigers for the Gamecocks who played Saturday. Although not indicated by the score, it was offense as well as defense that won the game for the Gamecocks. "The offense pretty well con trolled the hall, and when Clemson got it they were usually in a hole. It was a team effort," said de fensive safety Hellams. Tom Suggs piloted the Game cocks to nearly 400 yards total offense, including a 20-yard pass he caught himself. but failed to score. Commenting on the pass play on which Benny Galloway hit him for 20 yards, Suggs said that he had run the play earlier, with him blocking downfield for Galloway. "I realized that no one was picking me up so I told Benny to pass to me." In addition to liellanis' TI) scamper, the Greenwood back in tercepted two Clemson passes to halt Tiger drives. Butch Reeves, who played "a good aggressive game" accord ing to Dietzel, also stole a pass as did Pat Watson, who also had a fumble recovery. Carolina's Lynn Hodge, who hal not practiced all week, went into the game early as his replacement Joe Wingard was injured, and played the entire game on a bad ankle.
