Jack of Carolina -A Tr BY JOHN DAVID SPADE Sports FAlitor Carolina-Clemson means a lot of things to a lot of people One youngster thought enough of the Gamecocks to send the let ter at left to tell them how he feels. The traditional rivalry has a deep history, not just on the foot ball field. This letter is now a part of it. In the late forties thousands of counterfeit tickets were printed up and crowds of people found them selves standing outside with tickets while the s t a d i u in was already filled up. Early in the century, Clemson cadets stormed the horseshoe after Carolina had upset the Tigers. Only the efforts of an assistant: coach quelled the near riot before any blood was shed. Clemson-Carolina is a tradition. Records mean nothing when these two teams meet. A three or four touchdown underlog has been the victor at times. There is no more Big Thursday when the rivalry was the high point of the year in the state. But all of South Carolina turns its head to either Death Valley or the Cockpit each year and takes heed of the goings on. The tiger was burnt last night and Carolina fans h o p e to see more of that tomorrow. This is the game that can turn a poor season into a great victory. For Carolina a win would sal- 1 vage a disappointing year. For Clemson it would take the sting out of losses to non-ACC schools. For the Tigers it would also bring Come To H All The Tri ALLIGATOR BEL $17 GOLD or SILl $1 C HEDRIC 718 Saluc 5 PC A. For all but Benny Galloway. who helped Caro lina win in '63, it would be their only win against the Tigers. Paul Dietzel has been quoted, in correctly, as saying that last year's Tiger win would be the last. The head coach said Tuesday, "I've said some things I've wished I hadn't said, but that wasn't one of them." Dietzel realize% t h a t anything can happen in a rivalr like to iorrow's. When Cousin Frank said lie wi6hed lie could play Carolina tei time% a year, he wasn't think ing. The Gamecocks are a hard-nosed bunch of scrappers. They've looked terrible at times this year, and they've looked unbeatable at times. That's all part of the ups an(d downs of football. A team can't be up for every game. But Cl-mson is different. It's more than a game. Coach Dick Weldon of the USC staff summed it up when he said that anyone who wasn't up for a game against the Tigers couldn't be humanii. All the Gamecocks are human, as are the Tigers. Is Cousin Frank? O 31:10.-3.-5 By BILL MADDEN Staff Writer THE INTANGIBLES When two intense rivals of the magnitude of South Carolina and Clemson descend upon a gridiron for their version of head-to-head combat, it takes more than a mere analysis of the record to determine to any degree the out come of such a contest. Rather, a seriesi of certain events that surround the game and its combatants-"do or die" game pressure, amount of sacrifice that goes into victory, and psychological advantage, often hold the balance of power. These are the intangibles of sport. For Clemson Saturday, the intangibles are Coach Frank Howard's continuous success within the realms of the ACC over the past few campaigns; the fact that an unprecedented third consecutive conference championship rides in the balance, and of course the inevitable "state supremacy" over "them city folks." For Carolina the intangibles are just the opposite. The Gamecocks will be seeking to prevent another coronation at Clemson. To USC, nothing would erase the ignominy of past de feat more thoroughly than a victory over the Tigers. The big betters will be placing their green stuff on Frank Howard's intangibles-much the same as was the cardinal rule in pro football betting when Vince Lom bardi's Packers were involved in a money game. It will be up to the Gamecocks to upset Howard's apple cart and beat the odds. . * * Among the more conspicuous of the halftime departees from Carolina Stadium last Saturday were our self-ac claimed "paragons of spirit," the fraternities. Evidently, the rain had a profound effect in watering down those "spirits" . . . Chances are that a trio of Game cock opponents will be early round selections in the up coming pro draft-Virginia's Frank Quayle, Clemson's Buddy Gore, and of course the incomparable "jingle-joints" from Florida St., Ron Sellers . . . Former Gamecock assistant under Paul Dietzel, Jim Valek, is having his troubles as head coach at Illinois. Thus far this season the Illini are 1-8, having given up an average of 33 points per game. Such statistics are not conducive to any periods of longevity and the hope here is that Coach Valek has him self a long ternm contract. . . .
