Toy M( Pro Ba By JO BLAND Staff Writer It comes as a shock to some that Toy McCord, with one year of eligibility left at Carolina, has signed a baseball contract with the California Angels. Why? Well, let's start at the beginning. McCord's athletic activities be gan very early. His father had him swinging a bat as a toddler. I He attended the Gamecock Base ball Camp in Sumter at the ripe age of 9. So baseball was the sport for the youngster, but when he en-: tered the ninth grade, there was a change. Toy played quarterback on the varsity team and was also active in basketball an(l track. His junior year in high school marked a turning point in his sports activities. Toy was elected to go to the Shrine Bowl, held each year in Charlotte. C o I I e g e coaches sat up and took notice and action. Toy was selected by the coaches as Most Valuable Back, All-Southern, All-State, All-American, and Class A back of the year. A smashing record for a 5-8, 165-pound quarter back. These events were the deciding factor. Toy could and would play college football. Now came the period of indecision regarding his choice of schools. Toy was recruited by coaches from all over the nation. He fav ored Clemson but was dubious about their obvious disunity be tween the baseball and football departments, and the prejudiced attitudes regarding other schools -especially Carolina. Then Toy met Dean Putnam, Mrs. Ada Thomas, and Dr. Gil linger. These persons influenced him a great deal. He recog nized they were the kind of people he wanted to work for and with. He realized that a healthy future in football just didn't exist for him. He had always wanted to play pro baseball and he knew the time had come for positive action. Baseball won out over football and he signed with the Angels his junior year at Carolina. Now the Gamecocks are minus one de fensive back in our '68 season. Presently Toy's plans consist of leaving in March for six months practice in California. He feels a little out of place watching the action on the field, but has expressed no regrets in his decision. Toy has entered into a business (teal that is no longer just a sport, but a way of life. He will return to Carolina in the fall of 1969 to complete his graduation require ments. Thorn Monroe and Sal Toscan< will join WUSC Sports Director Chris Thomas for all the hom frosh basketball action. Last week the trio beamed the Biddie-Blohunk football game froni Carolina Stadium across the USC campus. The WUSC sports staff covert a wide range of athletic events Freshman basketball, v a r s i t 3 baseball, the Masters Golf Tourna ment, and NASCAR auto racing are a few of the events giver coverage by the campus radic station. On week-day evenings the sports staff offers a conprehen sive wrap-up on national, regional and local sports along with lively commentary.
