Military I Debated 2 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Three University of V i r g i n i a ROTC members debated the neces sity of military instruction with three students who felt such in struction was antagonistic to the basic ideals of the University in a recent controversy at the Uni versity of Virginia. Among those opposed to ROTC training were two members of SDS on the campus. The issue arose when Rogerf made a statement concerning som( of the coeds that "V is not foz Virgin." No precedent had been estab. lished for trying a chief executive so the defense decided to go ori the established method of the fed eral courts, in which instance Rog ers could not be tried but should, instead, be charged with impro. priety of office before the Student Senate. The motion was denied because the court felt Rogers was first of all a student of the University, and therefore accountable to and held responsible for the Student Regulations. He was, therefore, on trial as a student of the Univer sity and not as an officer. The court stated that "Rogers was found guilty because of, not in spite of, the circumstances and timing in w h i c h the action oc curred. By the very nature of the act, it is considered obscene by this court and must be judged ac cordingly." The defense, on the other hand, felt that the issue decided was not the statement, but rather the ail leged obscenity of it. The reply from an ROTC mid shipman was that the Navy an other branches of service sough to train officers through civiliai universities and that ROTC in struction in no way impedes intel lectual development. The fraternity brothers and pledges are preparing a rotating schedule which w i ll make at least one of them avail able at all times. This service was instituted two years ago after incidents similar to those last year on the Carolina campus. Many of the coeds said that they use the escorts even though the campus police patrol )emanded that he felt that the demonstration was a success judging from the reaction of many students.
