By BILL MADDEN Staff Writer "TO CHEER OR NOT TO CHEER" "Whomp 'em up side the head-hey! Whomp 'em up side the head-hey hey hey !" Contrary to the general belief, the piece of digression that appears above is a football cheer that is expected to be chanted with great enthusiasm by supposedly mature college students. Surely, the composer of such a masterpiece had to be in jest? Either that or it was his idea of an apt de scription of the fine art of facemasking. With a disappointing football season now in evidence, it has become an easy feat to criticize an apathetic student body. Those who are quick to fault student support, how ever, are evidently not confronted with the inane rash of student cheers such as "Whomp 'em up." Prior to the football campaign there had been a lot of talk about a proposed reformation of the football cheers. But, in the aftermath of the student elections the promises of May turned out to be just that - promises, and the reformation has apparently gone asunder. It is not the purpose here to take a slap at the job being performed by the cheerleaders. They are doing an adequate job under adverse conditions. But if they are to successfully revive a dying tradition at USC, the problem must be attacked from the grass roots. New cheers are desperately needed. Cheers that will not possess an aura of "highschoolishness" about them. Cheers that will not instill drudgery, but rather spirit. Finally, cheers that will provide a student body with a sense of pride in its school and a willingness to participate. So how about it, cheerleaders? "Whomp" out those old cheers and "sock it to 'em!" In a sophomore-studded year, it has been the sparkling performance of a couple of seniors leading the way the past few weeks. Benny Galloway and Wally Orrel should be singled out for individual credit in the Gamecocks' satisfying romp over Virginia. Again, however, it was the sophs that shone and gave USC fans great hope and anxiety for big things next year. Tom Suggs, Bennie Padgett, Al Usher, and, of course, a couple of juniors named Holloman and Zeigler. All made things pretty rough for the Cavaliers Saturday. do your contact lense a clean lii ContactecansesLensin heaven .. .woichhl.eThe mayuids ofwtheeeye. modernithieensinetrets the sbightespbitfofodir underpthetsens can make order toakeep your con tact lensesiasecomfwrta ble and convenientsas they were designedltosbe you haveouogete cafreo Ctachem. albe cs n h o may berc odeprao te hsbendo moderin sci pene bupre- ha mpoerso undre ens aian makereutithgr cothem s uneaabe Iwouleiaonthd order toa keepn yor con- Thsiasuec tacts lesoles as conrt- eeirtton bl n ovenient as caserican them. you av e wthaecr o rwi Lensinev sthem. steriecomeflsae contact nwyo naeededs anatieic twop or twore epre Leyouonat parer your man, tandu enob.G venicet aoweaing the It canbbeawith Lensine solutionsftrnccmplete contactblenscare.tJushe drop orutwo, obeforeeyou insert yourneisgcoaur an lubricatestitoallowingnth lens toLfloaimoreefreel in the eyeseluids.hThatt 0: Zeigle Zeigler Every time USC flanker he is setting at least three C one against Florida State.
