D>espite all the spirit shown at
the pep rally, not too many Game
cock football fans expected their
team to defeat the bigger, faster,
anid deeper Georgia Bulldogs.
IDooley's Dogs had always been
a powerful team on defense and
in running the football, and for
the past two years they possessed
one of the top kicking games in
the nation.
Georgia's performance against
Clemson, however, showed that the
Bulldogs would be even more po.
tent in their g a m e against the
Gamecocks as their power football
was supplemented by a highly com
petent passing a t t a c k featuring
touted soph passer .lMike Cavan
and the 9.1 sprinter-halfback Kent
Lawrence.

On the second p)lay of the game
Georgia'q Donnie Hampton faded
back deep. Alert defensive e n d
Lynn Hodge recognized the play
and dro)ped back into the flat.
Hodge's alertness paid off as he
picked off the pass for a Carolina
score with less than a minute gone.
This play fired Carolina up and
three ni i u t e s later lightning'
struck again as Butch Reeves in
tercepted and dodged tacklers to
the Georgia 16-yard line.
The -10,000 fans were berserk
with shock and joy and the offen
sive team was blocking and run
ning almost like madmen. A run
by the scatback, H1olloman, brought
the ball Inside the five where Muir
blasted in for the second quick
Score.
Like Carolina in their g a m e
against North Carolina, Georgia
kept its poise despite tle adverse
circuistances of being b e h i n d.
TheV m1ade great yardage on the
Insuing kickoff and then Iroce,led
to mix up running with delayed,
short passes. T'heir ability to cone
back and sc(ore quickly showed that
the Ganit-cocks had gained no great
ad-antage and mnomentun i t h
their t%wo quick scores.
Two lore interceptions by Pat
Watson and Rev-es led to two fiel
goals by Bill Dul>re who has great
spi-d off the tee.

Even with the 20-7 advantagi
