Stoudemii Prof. Robert Stoudemire an interview by a Gamecock Stoudemire For New ( By CANDY SILVER Staff Writer What can be done to improve the South Carolina state constitu tion? Professor Robert Stoude mire, assistant director of the USC Bureau of Governmental Re search, has been working on this problem for over a year. Prof. Stoudemire is serving as Research Director for the S. C. State Constitutional R e v i s i o n Committee. The committee was set up over a year ago by the General Assembly, and hopes to make a report by the next ses sion. Some of the suggestions they will make, according to Stoude mire, will be designed to eliminate some of the deadwood and obso lete laws in the present constitu ti.Ai, written in 1895. The committee is considering a major change in the courts, which ,vill bring about a "modified, uni fied court system," Stoudemire stated. This system will give the chief justice more power, and the OF C T HI Mode Shod Staff Photo by Bob Soldel -e Relaxes relaxes in his office during reporter. Researches onstitution g o v e r n o r somewhat greater power. A major discussion among com mittee members was concerned with whether or not a governor should be eligible to run for re election. The longest discussion was about what should happen if the governor is disabled, and how much power the It. governor should have, said Stoudemire. "The most important factor to consider in any constitutional change is the voters. In order to get their support, they must be shown that the revision is neces sary, and that the change is not detrimental. One must consider that every 'no' vote is not the same. Most voters who vote 'no' are against one part of the con stitution, not the whole constitu tion," Stoudemire stated. At the next election, the voters will probably vote on an amend ment which allows the substitu tions of a complete articlo and all related subject matter by a new article as an amendment. Stoude mire voiced the opinion that there is a very good chance this will pass, and it will allow for a new constitution without a convention. I A[nIES en io Geology Y Gives 'Ma By MIKE CREEL Staff Writer The Geology Department isn't all "rocks." In what other depart ment can you find such a collec tion of thought-provoking miscel lany as magical mystery tours, road signs, crossword puzzles, limericks and giant oysters? Dr. David Lawrence, professor of geology, is the source of this "unacademic" reform in teaching. In his classes, quizzes become "Magical M y s t e r y Tours" sprinkled with crossword puzzles, limericks and allusions to giant oysters. His lectures are supple mented by film strips containing unusual road signs aptly placed in comic sequence. "The road signs lose their imi pact if students know what is c o m i n g. Unfortunately, my 'Virginville' sign is too well known and I'm going to retire that slide for several years," said Dr. Lawrence. Turning to a more serious vein, Dr. Lawrence pointed to a bright future for the Geology Depart ment. Giving evidence of a healthy and g r o w i n g department, he pointed out "both sections of Geology 101 are filled beyond capacity again this fall, graduate enrollment has doubled within the past year and undergraduate ma jors are rising in number."
