The Gamecocks will prove to be a difficult obstacle in Coach How ard's plans, however. There is a growing giant here that may well prove to be a springboard for great teams at Carolina. That giant is the spirit and en thusiasm engulfing not only the Carolina student body, but the en tire city of Columbia. The All-America City, "twice" All-America as Mayor Bates would O' IcV asm Ne add, has finally made up its mind to turn its sleepy head to look at sports at USC. Columbia is alive with reminders of the Gamecocks. Thirty Game cock billboards attest to the par ticipation of the city's businessmen in the spirit of Carolina. Placemats at restaurants in Co lumbia will b e a r the Fighting Gamecock standard and city limit signs will recognize Columbia as the "Home of the Gamecocks." One of the greatest fights in this city in the coming years will be one between two g r e a t friends. Both coaches seem to be prett well on schedule. Coach McGuire i sporting a 31-14 record over th past two seasons andi Coach Dietz( has some surprises in store for th opposition this year. One of ther is the spirit here in Columbia.
