The words that Mayor John Lindsey is trying to make the slogan of New York City might serve equally well at the Univer sity of South Carolina. The beginning of the fall semester brings a new academic year. And we wonder what it holds. . . . We are not alone. University teachers and administrators throughout the nation are wondering the same thing. After last year's "Battle of Morningside Heights," as the student revolt at Columbia University has been called, a chain reaction of student revolution spread throughout the country. This semester, says Dean William Ferm of Mount Holyoke College Chapel, administra tors are determined they will get through the academic year without another round of crippling sit-ins, barricades and blood shed. "Their business is the exchange of ideas, not the exchange of flying bricks." But what about the students? How do they feel? To answer, we must first ask what the students really want in their thrust for power. Their demands vary from campus to campus, even from student to student. The issues cover everything from racial injustice and the war in Vietnam to age-old campus complaints about curriculum and food service and curfews. But the students seem to all agree on one thing-they want changes. To many a student, God is dead, Dad doesn't understand, and the university con siders him no more than an ID number. But these are not new feelings and students have tolerated them for some time. Why the recent student rebellions? Not long ago today's youth were known as the apathetic generation. Their chief grievance was a univer sity so big that mass instruction was replac ing inquiry, and the IBM card was becoming the symbol of change. The Berkeley students coined the slogan, "I am a person. Do not bend, spindle or mutilate." They established the pattern of drawing attention to needed campus re forms through massive protest-and they were successful to the extent that such pro test set many reforms in motion. They dared. They cared. Now it's your turn. Care. Get involved. lie concerned concerned enough to act. We're tired of talking just to hear our selves talk. We're tired of an ineffective student government. We're concerned about the communications gap between the stu dents and the faculty-administration. There are some members of the USC ad ministration who say they are willing to listen. But two University vice presidents told us last spring that they had learned to "handle" students. Their formula: pacify the ones who are here now until they grad uate, because then a new group will be here with the same complaints. Does it never occur to these men that if they would listen now, that new group might not have the same problems to complain about? Concern often leads to protest, but pro test. need not lead to violence. "Any mad man can terrorize a city or kill a Senator," says columnist James Reston, "but remaking a society into something even a little more fair, decent and compassionate is a much more difficult and complicated job. "It is hard work. It takes a very long time. It requires a great many patient peo ple sticking with a great many tough jobs, but the greatest ally of the militant minor ity is the indifference of the majority."
