IS Profes, NATO Ba By SUSAN ROSS Staff Writer James G. Holland, a specialist in U. S. national security policy, is associate director of the Institute of International Studies -t USC. Also an associate professor in the International Studies Department, Holland has s e r v e d in various senior staff and command positions in the U. S. Army and NATO over a period of twenty-six years. Holland titled the field of Inter national Studies as a "steadily in creasing force today." "The teach ing profession is ,expanding, and the need for members of the busi ness world who can serve in inter national departments, such as in foreign departments of banks, is growing." Professor Holland became asso ciated with the USC Department of International Studies in his present capacity in 1967. He described the Carolina department as "unusual in that it is separate from the Politi cal Science Department - a condi *tion not found in most colleges." Serving as an infantry battalion commander in World War II, he was later chosen in 1945 as the senior U. S. Army Intelligence of ficer in Trieste and Venezia Guila. After receiving a B.S. degree at the University of Alabama, Holland went on to attain an M.A. in inter national relations at Yale Univer sity in 1950. In the same year he joined the faculty at West Point where he moved from assistant to associate professor in the Department of So cial Sciences. He graduated from the Command and General Staff College in 1955 and was assigned the position of senior military ad visor to the South Korean Army. In the following year he was ap pointed to the position of Special Assistant to the U. S. High Com missioner for the Ryuku Islands. After attending the U. S. In 1962 Holland became Chief of Defense Plans at NATO's SHAPE headquarters in France. He later rejoined the War College and then was appointed the George C. Mar shall Director of Instruction and Research in the following year. Holland's first c o n t a c t with South Carolina was during World War II when he was stationed at Camp Croft which was in Spartan burg. Although he called Michigan "home" during his military career, he is presently residing in the Whitehall area of Columbia. The father of five children and five grandchildren, Holland finds pleasure in working in his yard. After a military career, such out door activity adds a "needed sup plement" to his desk job at Caro lina. Among other activities in his career Holland has written on na tional intelligence and security for the Armed Forces. His published works include "Economics of Na tional Security" (with George A. Lincoln), and the "Allied Command Europe's Mobile Force," Military Digest.
