Darazs ( Choirs A Arpad Darazs, assistant profes sor of music, is a man of uniquo musical achievement-he is an or ganizer of choirs. Between forming a Hungarian farmers' chorus and a boys' choir which performed with the New York Philharmonic, he must have organized more than 30 choral groups in his lifetime. It all began when, as a ninti grader, he broke school rules b3 getting to. gether a nois3 little choruj after class ir the schoo washroom. Sev eral choiri later, durinj World Wai II, he wisel3 formed a lean 150 - man arm] DARAZS chorus to sere nade the kitchens for second help ings. Before coming to this countr3 from Hungary in 1956, the younf choirmaster had assembled sue diverse groups as a shoemakers male glee club, a telephone com pany choir and a teacher's colleg4 chorus. The latter won first place in a national centennial music competi. Faculty Footnotes Canadiaj Dr. Remj The Canadian Historical Associa tion has published a lecture by Dr. Richard A. Pempel which he pre sented at the Association's meeting last year. The article, "Tariff Reform and the Resurgence of the Liberal Party: May 1903-February 1904,' is a study of the reaction of British liberals to Joseph Chamberlain's tariff reform in 1903. A one-volume history of the Catholic Church by Dr. John P Dolan of the Department of His. tory has been published in the Bar ron series "Compact Studies ol World Religions." "Catholicism, An Historical Sur vey" is the tenth book in as many years by Dr. Dolan. It is a com prehensive history of the origin, development and transformation of the Catholic Church from its be ginning to the reform movements of the mid-twentieth century. Also included in the history are writings of key f ig ur es in the church's 2000-year development. Another recent book by Dr. Do. lan, "The Essential Thomas More,' was published in December by the New American Library. ADMISSIONS Dr. Rollin E. Godfrey, director of Admissions and Registration, at tended the 54th annual meeting of the Association of Collegiate Regis trars and Admissions Officers last week in Philadelphia, Pa. Dr. Godfrey is a member of the association's ethics committee and a a s i s t s with the publication of "Conference News." AEROSPACE STUDIES Major Richard D. In this country, Daraza quickly made a name for him self by earning a $6,000 Rocke feller Foundation grant and by directing the superb St. Kilian's Boychoir, which appeared with Leonard Bernstein's New York Philharmonic and b e f o r e a warmly receptive United Na tions General Assembly audi ence. Since joining the JSC music faculty as choral director two years ago, Asst. Prof. Darazs has not only trained three outstanding choirs on campus (and made plans for several more) but has brought the gift of song to two new non university groups. During his spare time, he con ducts the Columbia Boychoir, an engaging chorus of 55 elementary school boys, and the Columbia Barbershop Chorus. L Daraza has equal enthusiasm and affection for the University students who work with him long hours each week in the Concert, Oratorio and Madrigal i choirs and in his five music - classes. P Associati oel's Tar P. McConnell, USAF chief of staff. The letter was notification that the 317th Fighter Intercep tor Squadron of Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, to which Major Mc Creary was assigned prior to com ing to USC, has been awarded the Hughes Trophy. The trophy is an annual award given to the out standing fighter interceptor squad ron assigned an air defense mis sion. BUSINESS Dr. Olin S. Pugh of the College of Business Administration at tended a meeting of the Banking Education Committee of the Ameri can Banker's Association last week in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. He is one of two academic members on the committee. EDUCATION Dr. Sue T. Rouse represented South Carolina at a meeting in New York City last week of the Council for Exceptional Children. A specialist in the education of children with learning problems, she will be the state's representa tive on the Council's Board of Gov ernors. Dr. Rouse teaches courses at the University on the instruction of mentally retarted and other "ex ceptional" children and is author of a number of national publica tions on the subject. ENGINEERING Dr. W. K. Humphries, assistant professor of civil engineering, has published an article, "Stress His tory Effects on the Dynamic Modu lus of Clay." The article was published in the March issue of the American So ciety of Engineers Journal of the Soil and Foundation Division. FOREIGN LANGUAGES Dr. Douglas F. Connelly, associate professor in the Department of History, has had his new book, "The Gentle Bonaparte: A Biogra phy of Joseph, Napoleon's Elder Brother," published by the Mac millan Co. on Prints ff Paper will be in Europe for ten weeks on a sabbatical trip which began the first week of April. Dr. Bub will study German lit erature and the possibilities of a USC student-year-abroad program at a German school for students of German. He will also study new interpre tations of Goethe's "Faust" and will do research for two articles on German literature during his stay through June 30 in Switzerland and Germany. He led his broth er's armies in the hope of winning quick victory and bringing en lightened government to "his peo ple." Handsome, intelligent, I i b e r a I and an inveterate do-gooder, he was loved by the people. Women adored him and men invariably liked him, even if they questioned his political ideas or military abil ity. As a public figure he was called everything from a "philosopher king" to a "soft-headed bungler." Joseph was popular during his 17-year exile in America after 1815. Niles' Register praised that "peaceable gentleman," Bonaparte, who was "raising cabbages" in New Jersey. He was made a mem ber of the American Philosophical Society. Walsh, wife of the head of the USC Depart ment of Psychology. They will 3pearhead the South Carolina drive to give Sen. Eugene Mc Carthy the Democratic nomination for the presidency of the United States. At his first press conference Dr. Wilson said the group's aim is to attract followers from the ranks of other established political par ties. Dr. Wilson said the group is counting on the support of the state's young people which the senator has received in other areas. Formed as an affiliate to the state group is a campus group named Students for McCarthy USC, chaired by Tom Callahan. Promoting the candidacy of Eu gene McCarthy for the U. S. presidency, the Students for Mc Carthy-USC and the South Caro linians for McCarthy are largely parallel organizations - designed ror the same purpose, but on dif ferent levels.
