Mice, By LINDA JO, MANGUM Staff Writer Dr. Lisles Mitchell of the geog raphy department likes to inter sperse his explanation with "It's so Mickey Mouse." His students, naturally, don't let ___he phrase pass by unnoticed. "Mickey Mouse" Mitchell is the proud owner of a pair of home made Mickey Mouse ears and a certificate to the Mickey Mouse Club. Dr. Mitchell first earned the nickname while teaching as a graduate student at Ohio State University and working towa.d his masters degree. He completed his doctoral dis sertation in 1967 after coming to the University to teach. Dr. Mit e ell t e a c h e s the introductory course in geography, urban geog raphy, economic geography, statis ticals methods and location analy sis. He considers the introductory geography course taught at the University a "glorified high school course," and he noted that similar courses are being taught at the junior high and high school levels in other states. Praising the University's mas ters degree program in geog raphy, Mitchell noted that it ranks high at present and that in the near future the geography department hopes to initiate a doctoral program. "Most people don't have any idea what geography is," said )r. Mitchell. RESERVATIO 1 Mixes earning inter-relate. Recreational geography is one of Dr. Mitchell's specialities and the subject of both his masters thesis and doctoral dissertation. Recrea tional geography involves recrea tional activity and how it differs in various places over the world. Among other articles that he has had published, two abstracts of his disseration have been pub lished. His other academic activities in clude being a lower division acad emic adviser and advising four masters degrec candidates. He was director of the visiting lecturers program in applied statistics and one of the chairmen for the Visit ing Scholars Program. A member of Covenant Presby terian Church, Dr. Mitchell coaches the intermediate boys basketball team and is president of his Sun day School class. He is also active in the Wesley Foundation at the University. le is adviser of the Town Men's Association which he described as "a much needed or ganization. - Dr. Mitchell is the father of a daughter, 5, and a son, 3. His wvife's activities include being a Girl Scout leader. A favorite Mitchel expression is that one "must actively enter into the process," and this is a philoso ply which he both suggests to his students and lives by himself. lie believes that every student is interested in something, and that it is the University's role to allow enough freedom so that every stu dent can enter into the process.
