McGuir Of Car By HEYWARD ADDY Asum. Sports Editor Carolina Basketball Coach Frank McGuire has the people of the state so excited and proud of him that he could probably be elected governor if he wanted the Job. He may have enemies in this area, but they are few and far be ( tween. When it comes to friends, four Carolina students feel that he was the best friend anyone could ask for to them. Craig Gulick, Gary M a u r e r, Larry Blasi, and Jerry Sellers left the Carolina campus about noon on the afternoon of the UNC basket ball game at Chapel Hill. T h e y were under the impression that the seating arrangements at the games would be similar to those here, and they thought that ID cards could be purchased. However, they were quite mis #aken and soon found out that passage to the game was not possi ble. Their next move was to find out where the Gamecocks were staying and go to see what Coach McGuire could do for them. "Coach McGuire was very nice to us and wanted to help after we explained our situation," recalled Gulick. "He said that he was not sure if he could do anything but to come back later and ride to the game with the team." We were seated directly behind the Carolina bench during the freshman game, but these places were soon taken before the second game started." "When Coach McGuire came out of the dressing room with his team, he noticed that we were being moved," continued Sellers, "so, he made room on the end of the play ers bench and told us to be seated there, where we remained for the entire game." "We were about the only stu dents from Carolina there," ex plained Maurer, "And after we won the game, we carried the players and their coach around the floor. We immediately thanked Coach Mc Guire again before he entered the dressing room. He was in the room only a short time, when he opened the door and told us to come in because we had also been a part of the win. After the meeting he asked us if we had a way back and if not would we like to go back with the team." "I'm grateful to Coach McGuire. He is not only a good coach but he is also a great man. I think this incident goes to prove that he will do anything for a student, because he went out of his way to help us. I'm just thankful that I was one of those who needed his help," com mented Blasi. s Calendar DAY ke old gym: eabody Gym: Im. As we were going into the locker room after the game, the North Carolina fans were looking at us in complete silence and I was so happy to be associated with such a great team and a great coach and to share first hand a tremendous vic tory for a fast growing university in the field of athletics," said Gulick. "I just don't see how a person so busy can take time out to help some students he doesn't even know. He told us that anyone who drove 400 miles to see a basketball game I should get to see it. This is the closest I'll ever come to being a participant of a basketball team and I'll never forget the experience. Coach McGuire's winning attitude is indicative of his whole basketball program and his desire for Caro lina students to be the very best," concluded Sellers. RICH III Staff Writer Pitching will determine the suc cess of Jackie Powers' 1968 base ball team as Carolina opens its season tomor row at Georgia Southern. The loss of pitchers Bobby Bry ant and Eddie Chester has left a question mark in the Gamecocks' pitching corps. Bryant and Chester were both lefthanders and lack of a proven southpaw may be the Gamecocks' biggest problem. Ronnie Evans, who had a 6-0 record last year, and Billy Reit meier, 5-2, are the top returning righthanders and will probably be the mainstays of the mound staff. "Right now we are looking for two more starters and a reliever from the rest of our pitchers," said Powers. Wally Medlin, Pat Laing and Buzz Smith are the varsity candidates. A number of freshmen may be helpful in solving the problem. "Thero's a new factor involved this year," Powers said. "Freshmen are eligible to play for the varsity for the first time." Eddie Bolton, Gary L a n c e and Don Urbanciz, the -A4 und Staff Challenge team's only southpaw, are fighting or varsty positions. "T h e s e three boys look like strong candidates for the varsity at the moment," said Powers. "Lance has been particularly impressive. He is just beginning to bloom as a pitcher." Butch Anderson, Billy Petoskey, and Bailey McClinton, all freshmen, have proved their ability as play ers. "McClinton has been impressive defensively at third base and Petos key has looked good too," said Powers. Petoskey plays in the out field. "I in.agine that we'll have five ireshm"n on the varsity travelling squad this season," said the Game cock boss. The Gamecocks open their home season next Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Capital City Ball Park against Ohio University. There are possibly a few more pitchers who might help the squad. "Gary Huhn, Jim Robertson, Ronny Fullmer, and Donny C h u r c h i l l are all right-handed pitchers and have been playing some in the o u t f i e I d," added Powers.
