Dr. MeNu Friend, P By SUSAN TANNER Staff Writer The absence of Dr. Robert B. McNulty is sorely felt in the Wal lace Thompson Infirmary. With the passing of Dr. Mc Nulty last month his friends, col leagues, associates, and one-time patients feel the University has lost an integral part of the Caro ( lina community. He was not only a wonderful person to work for and with, they recall, but also a good friend and adviser. In a deeper sense, Mrs. Julia Gardner, infirmary nurse, re members that to talk with Dr. McNulty was to know him. It was an opportunity to share an understanding, she said, and to realize that, if you were a stu dent, he was behind you 103 per cent. His close friends, Vice President of Student Affairs C. H. Witten and Head Track Coach W. 0. Bas kin knew him as a great friend of everyone. As they never heard an unkind word said about him, so even was he the first to find what was worthwhile about an other. Not only was he a highly quali fied physician, Baskin said, but he was a highly qualified person ality for dealing with the student body personally. As team physi cian he knew the boys and was as agile as many of them. Yet, his high principles and sense of immediacy were an in spiration. He was a rare man in many ways. Apart from his devotion to the students and his job, he found time to needlepoint, pic kle, and knit, a source of won derment to his friends. Dr. McNulty was born in Co lumbia in 1910. He attended the University of North Carolina for two years and then continued hin undergraduate career at USC. He completed his training at the Medical College of S. C. Prior to and following World War 1I he had a private practice. During the War he served in the Army Medical Corps, dis charged as a major. In 1954 he returned to Carolina as director of the Infirmary and team physi cian, holding the latter post until a few years ago. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lee Mann McNulty of Columbia and two sons and a (laughter. U.S.C.
