He was killed in an automo bile accident near Aiken on Satur day night, March 8, 1952.) (The Gamecock, March 14, 1952) -Steve W a d i a k left much for Carolina to be proud of. He was chosen "Player of the Year" for the Southern Conference in 1950. In 1950-51, he was named to "Collier's Magazine" and In ternational News Service All-South Teams. lie starred in the Senior Bowl game at Mobile, Ala., In 1951,, and was selected to play in the Blue-Gray game at Montgomery, Ala. Wadiak's greatest honor, he thought, was being voted Caro lina's most valuable player by his teanfma tes of 1950. And they unanimously named him captain for the 1951 season. Wadiak started in every game; from the time he broke into the I i n e u p his freshman year. In his first year he averaged 8.2 yards a run. ' he next year he led the conference in rushing with 775 yards. The 1950 season was the greatest for Wadiak and the spectators. No one who saw him play against Clemson will ever forget his in spiring feats. He ran 40, 66 and 73 yards to almost single-handedly tie the Tigers, 14-14. Wadiak's longest run was against George Washington. It was a 7-7 tie until Steve broke away with a jet-propulsion burst which didn't. slow down until he had run 95 yards for a touchdown. In 1951, Steve showed the stuff he was made of. In pre-season play he received a broken rib. Ie story I of how he uncomplainingly played in every game soon became a classic. It is doubtful that another Southern Conference player will break the 2,878-yard rushing rec ord set by Wadiak in his four years of playing for Carolina. His 998 yards (luring the 1950 season will be another record hard to beat. The game should be a drawing card, as Davidson and. Carolina have been friendly rivals: ever since the two have been play ing football. As to the Clemson matter, Man ager Hughes wrote to the manager, of the football team at Clemson asking for a game. The two col leges have met on the diamond since the trouble of P few years ago, and have a garre scheduled in baseball this year, so it was. thought that the football g a m e would be a big thing for both in stitutions and would tend to bring, them closer together. Thus Grady became the f i r s t Gamecock in history to make the honored squad. Wallace, the nation's top scorer, was placed on the first team with Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlain of Kansas, Lennie Rosenbl u t h of North Carolina, "Hot Rod" Hunley of West Virginia and Chet "The Jet" Forte of Columbia. Chamberlain led the balloting for first team honors, thereby cap turing the honorary captaincy of the squad. Thus, with W a I I a c e bringing honors to USC and the state of S o u t h Carolina, he became the third player of a South Carolina team to make All-American in the past five years. Frank Selvy made the squad two years in succession as did Darrell Floyd, both of whom played their collegiate ball at Fur man.
