"The people vho wrote me don't want this thing to get around in case they should want to sell the house," he explained. "About all I ran say is they believe someone has put a curse on their house. And although his quest hasn't turned up any ghosts, he has en countered some things in other spiritual realms. "There used to be a house in Aiken where an old woman lived. She had a maze of hedges in her backyard, and in the center was a bust of the devil. "We used to sneak behind the house andi hide in the bushes. She would come out, kneel and worship. She spoke in a tongue unknown to us. It was strange." Johnson also visited another very old house near Aiken-this one deep in a wvooded area. "The man who built it was quite an architect. It had a number of things which weren't common in architecture in those days." One of the more "uncommon" things was on the floor in front of the fireplace-the great circle used in witchcraft. Johnson recog nized it because of a study of techniques used in the witching art. An ax, corroded along the blade, andi a musket attracted him to an old house in Camden, but he was unable to go inside. "I talked to a man who owned the house but who had never lived there. He didn't believe in ghosts. There is an old story about an ax murder there."
