The collection of gems and semi precious stones was given to USC by Mrs. Louise Howard of Green ville. The stones were collected and cut by her late husband, J. Harry Howard. The Howard collection, which will be displayed in the War Me morial with the Baruch silver and the mace, includes emeralds, sap phires, zircons, aquamarines, gar nets, amethysts and more than 100 other varieties of gems. The stones range in colors from Student Unio. Beech Mt., ]\ A ski trip for USC students will be conducted the last weekend in February, according to Student Union Vice President Elbie Conard. The Student Union is also plan ning a spring recess trip to Nassau for students, faculty and staff. The ski weekend at Beech Mt., N. C., will be offered Carolina students at a reduced group rate. Definite price will be determined by the number of students making the trip. "The more who go, the less it will cost," Conard said. Stu dents could save as much as one half or one-third the usual price. The group will leave Columbia Friday and spend Friday andl Sat urdlay nights at the resort. Cost will include transportation to andl from Beech Mt., accommoda tions, equipment rental, two op tional ski lessons, tow tickets and possibly food. Beech Mt., a relatively new resort near Boone, N. C., is 209 miles from Columbia. Good ski conditions are assured by artificial snow machines. Live e~ntertainment is a feature of Beech Tree Village. Dr. Rollin E. Godfrey. director of admissions and registration, said he expects about 150 new freshmen and 200 transfer students for regis tration which begins Jan. 31. According to Dr. Rufus G. Fel lers, dean of the College of En gineering and chairman of the Registration Planning Committee, computer registration will not be used for the spring semester be cause "it was such a mess (this all) it left a bad taste in every one's mouth . . . Procedures for spring registra tion will be similar to hand regis tration procedures in past semes ters. After receiving faculty advisors' approval of courses requested, stu dents can enroll for courses by ob taining course cards from the vari ous departments.
