Carolina's m o r e experienced varsity reserves, braced by a ball hawking defense and propelled by hard-running Don Dunning, chopped down the freshman Bid dies, 21-13, in the annual Frosh Bohunk football battle. Since the two teams practice together and since several fresh men will be seeking positions on future varsity teams, feeling ran very high for the game. The Bohunks, including varsity reserves and red-shirts, scored first with five minutes to go in the first quarter on a smash by fullback Dunning. Swimmers By STEVE KELLEY Staff Writer As Carolina's swimming team headed into its seventh week of practice Monday, Coach Jack Thompson expressed pleasure with its progress. The team has been looking "v'ery exceptional for this early in the training season," according to the coach. Among the squad members who have stood out in practice, aThompson said, Is Covington Stanwyck, a sophomore from Washington, D. C. Stanwyck, called the "most im proved swimmer on the squad," has been swimming the 500 and 1000-yard freestyle events and in an intra-squad meet Saturday came close to the school record in the 1000-yarder. David White, a junior, has been impressive in the 200-yard indi vidlual medley, added the coach, and Jim Weinzettle has swum the 100-yard breaststroke in near rec ord time. The Biddies posted their first points late in the first half when a 30-yard bullet pass from Tom Suggs was deflected off the hands of Ken Walkup and into the hands of an alert Tom Trevillian. The teams battled on even terms throughout the third period until 'hunk halfback Ron Palmer returned a Biddie punt to the Bid (lie 19. Quarterback Dan Harbi son directed the squad in for the touchdown, with Dunning scoring his third TD. In the waning minutes of the game the Biddies tacked on their final tally, set up by a 33-yard aerial from Randy Yoakum to Trevillian. Bob Miranda plunged two yards for the score. N. C. State, third ranked in na tional polls, took on a rough Penn State team and came out on the short end of a 13-8 count. It was the first loss for the Wolfpack, who remain unbeaten in ACC play. State will meet Clemson, also undefeated in league action, in a showdown battle at Clemson's Death Valley Saturday. A win by Clemson would leave Carolina a chance to tie for the conference crown. LIONS SCORE EARLY In the Penn State game, the Nittany Lions scored twice in the first seven minutes, driving 60 yards with the opening kick-off and scoring again on a 67-yard run from scrimmage. State scored on two field goals and a safety. The Wolfpack barely missed scoring inside the Penn State five in the closing moments. Saturday was Homecoming at Clemson and the Tigers responded with a 28-7 triumph over Mary land. Buddy Gore and Jimmy Ad dison led the Tiger attack. Virginia scored twice in one minute during the first quarter, then went on to trounce UNC, 40-7, in a night game at Char lottesville. I)UKE WINS In other ACC action, fired-up Duke romped past Navy, 35-16, in the 21st annual Oyster Bowl in Norfolk. Navy scored first on a field goal, but Duke took a 7-3 second quarter lead on a run by Pete Schaefer. At halftime it was 10-7, favor of Navy, but Duke roared back to score four more times and nail down the victory. In another night game, Wake Forest captured its third straight >r Opener the one- and three-meter board events. Thompson considers his chances of repeating as champion to be "excellent." A new NCAA ruling which gives freshmen eligibility for swimming should help the Caro lina mermen who "have probably as good a class of freshmen as any school in the conference," Thompson said. ell 3igmuler NELRY REPAIRS For Christmas 1e Street POINTS 161 .ND CO.
