Soccer-style kicker Bob Riesenfield added a 37-yard field goal to give Duke a three-point halftime advantage. Coming back strong in the sec ond half, the Gamecocks took the opening kick-off and marched in for their second touchdown. Employing a spread forma tion, the Gamecocks miffed the first two plays of the drive, then broke fullback Warren Muir loose for a 42-yard jaunt into Duke territory. Aided by an 11-yard run by Ben Garnto and a ten-yard pass to John Gregory, the Gamecocks drove inside the Blue Devil ten, and Mike Fair scored on a bootleg run. With Calabrese and Woodall providing most of the power, I)uke -ammed home theig second touch 'town with less than six minutes left in the game. Again it was the big fullback crunching in for the score. Down by three, Carolina stormed back, and with less than a minute to go, Fair hit Fred Zeigler with a pass on Duke's three-yard line. Statistically, the Gamecocks took a beating, trailing Duke in first downs, 20-11, and in total yardage, 333-196. Leading rusher in the game was Calabrese who ground out 96 yards. Carolina's sophomore sen sation Muir led USC with 88 yards gained. In the passing department, Fair completed seven of 13 for 81 yards, while Woodall hit on 10 of 14 for 91. Zeigler was the leading re ceiver in the game with four catches. With three wins to their credit, the Gamecocks have outscored their opponents 71-30 and are within 24 points of equaling their total 1966 scoring output. Warren Muir leads the team in rushing with :130 yards and a 4.M per carry average. Garnto, last year's leading rusher, has rushed for 81 yards and Roy Don Reeves has legged 45. Fair leads in total offense with a total of 414 yards, including 394 through the air. The senior quar terback has completed 30 passes in 55 attempts.
