Fall Til By Uni USC Press has announced foui titles for its fall list this year, in. cluding "China and the West" b3 Wolfgang Franke of Hamburg Germany, internationally knowr author. All books are scheduled for re lease between Oct. 2 and Oct. 23. Other titles are "Research Materials in South Carolina: A Guide," by John Hammond Moore; "Jesse Stuart: His Life and Works," by Everetta Love Blair; and "The Papers of John C. Calhor"t, Vol. III: 1818-1819," edited by W. Edwin Hemphill. "Research Materials," which will appear Oct. 2 as first in the series, is a cooperative undertaking of the S. C. State Library Board, the S. C. Librarians Assn., and the University of South Carolina Press. It is a bibliographic survey of all libraries and archives in the state and is intended to improve and coordinate reference services. Dr. Moore is associate professot of history at Georgia State College and formerly taught at Winthrop College and the University of Vir ginia. He is a native of Houlton Mo. The book on Jesse Stuart is the first complete study of the poet laureate of Kentucky, one of the 20th century's best-known writers, poets and lecturers. Author of the book on Jesse Stuart is Dr. Everetta Love Blair of 5046 Lakeshore Drive in Co lumbia. The study is a result of the first meeting of Jesse Stuart and Everetta Blair 20 years ago in New York City. Mrs. Blair, a Texan born in Whitesboro, Grayson County, at tended Southern Methodist Uni versity and is a graduate of the University of Texas. After study abroad and in Columbia, Mrs. Blair earned the master's and doc tor's degree at the University of South Carolina. Volume three of "The Papers of John C. Calhoun," also to be published Oct. 9, is the second volume by Dr. Hemphill, who took over the editorship follow ing the death of Dr. Robert L. Meriwether, editor of volume one. The third volume concerns the years when Calhoun was Secretary of War of the United States, act ing Secretary of the Navy, and virtually acting President of the United States (luring a month of crisis. The author of "China and the West," which will be published Oct. 23 is professor and director of the Seminar for Chinese Speech and Culture at the Uni versity of Hamburg. Dr. Franke was formerly visiting professor at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, and visiting re search fellow of the Center of East Asian Studies at Harvard University 1957-1958. "China and the West" is being published simultaneously in Eng land by Basil Blackwell & Mott, Ltd., Oxford. Concerning the book, Dr. Franke said it is not a history "or even a summary," but represents an at tempt to describe the historical developments of a number of prob lems which are characteristic of China's relations with the West, and which still have a decisive in fluence at the present time. Nyaradi was born and edu cated in Hungary, receiving two doctorate degrees from the Royal Hungarian University of Budapest -one in political science and an other in jurisprudence. He was an attorney for thirteen years and also served as legal advisor and executive director of one of the largest banks in Hungary. During World War II he par ticipated in the anti-Nazi under ground movement in Hungary. USC Cast Undertakes Production By BETSY ANNESE Staff Writer The cast has been chosen for the University's first major production of the fall. The performers for "Spoon River Anthology," by Edgar Lee Masters, are Don McMahon, Karen Peters, Adrian K e n n e d y, Carol Tracy, Terry Lamb and Flo Coker. This play, staged on Broadway for about six m o n t h s, will be executed Oct. 25-27. A guitarist will accompany most of t h e s e actors. Russell Green, University Theater director, announced other plans for the theater. "We have coming up on Nov. 4 the play "Wild Duck" by Ibsen. Our department would like to en courage all University students to try out next week for our first graduate thesis production. "If we had to limit the parts to theater majors we simply could not go on. We need backstage help as well as actors." Any University student is eligi ble. Tryouts will be in Drayton Hall on Sept. 25 and 26 at 7 p.m. The play will be directed by Terry Lamb, a g r a d u a t e student in theater production. Green explained that a require ment for the M.A. in play produc tion is to direct a performance. Other University Theater pro ductions will be a two-evening bill of plays by Samuel Beckett, in cluding "W a i t i n g for Godot," "Play," "Krapp's Last Tape" on l)ec. 7, 8, 9 and directed by Dr. Conrad Bishop; a Dec. 16 graduate production of "Easter" by August Strindherg; and one-act plays pre sented by the USC class in play direction on the evenings of Dec. 19 and Jan. 12. Rehearsals will be held weekday evenings and Saturday and Sun (lay afternoons.
