Caro1in In AC( By JAY BENDER Staff Writer The University of Maryland ained their 12th consecutive ACC Indoor Track title at the 14th an nual running of the ACC Indoor Games at Chapel Hill, N. C. USC was represented by 13 varsity and seven freshmen con testants, the smallest team that Coach Weems Baskin has fielded since coming to Columbia. Maryland was heavily favored, and the point battle was expected to be close for the second and third slots. Pre-meet predictions were fairly accurate as Maryland ran up 79 points for the victory. They were followed in turn by North Carolina 34, Clemson 18, Duke 17%, South Carolina 14%, N. C. State 13, Wake Forest three and Virginia one. The Gamecocks placed six final ists in five events and took third place in the one-mile relay for their points. reshmen ry College The game was nip-and-tuck all the way with the Biddies posting a 33-27 halftime lead. The Biddies hit on 26 of 62 shots for a 11.9 percentage, while Gordon hit orn 27 of 71 for an average of 38 per cent. The Carolina Frosh had a 41-37 rebounding edge. Iading scorer for Gordon Mili tary was Barry Levine, who hit on 10 of 23 shots for 20 points. Tommy Mullinax was next with 1 points, and Chuck Green added 11. Pasco tied with Duke's James Martin in a tight finish in the 70-yard high hurdles. The winner of the event was James Taylor of Clemson with an :8.8 clocking. Swarts landed a third in the shot put with a toss of 49' 10%". Swarte was joined by teammate T o m DeMarkc who placed fifth to givt the Gamecock$ their only double in the meet. Other scorer: for USC were Dave Smith Bob Taylor and David Ped HARRIS die. Smith wen1 6' 2" in the high jump to plac( fourth, and Peddie gained a simi lar place in the one-mile run. Bob Taylor, newly elected tean captain, won his heat in the 1000 yard run but was unable to finist higher than fifth in the final. The USC mile-relay team of Jim Wingo, Eddie Sonnenfeld Bob Harris and Bob Turnei turned in a 3:27.5 performance 3.1 seconds off Maryland's win ning time, to capture third. Meet records were broken ir three events and tied in one. Ir the trials Dan Donahue of Mary land, Bill Bassett of North Care lina and Taylor all bettered th4 old mark in the 1000-yard run. The old record was set by Mil ton Matthews of Maryland it 1966 with a time of 2:16. Return ing in the final, Donahue lowere< his time again to set a new marl of 2:11.6. N. C. State's two-mile rela! team of Pete McManus, Jeff Pra ther, Steve Middleton and Roi Sicoli combined for a 7:53.2 t4 beat Maryland by a yard and clil a second from UNC's 1963 record Terp David Starnes startcd hi finishing kick at the beginnin of the gun lap and won the twc mile run 15 yards ahead of Duke' Paul Rogers. The final in the 600 saw Ron England of State take the lead and hold it until the finul lap when Maryland's John Warfield passed him with a strong finish ing sprint. Warfield's time of 1:12.5 made him a co-holder of the ACC record with John Pettyman who set the mark for Maryland in 1963. An awards ceremony at the b. ginning of the evening activity honored the founder of the AC Indoor Games and long-time U NC Athletic Director Robert A. (1ob) Fetzer. Also honored in the ceremory was UNC's 65-G6 track captain Jim Meade, who received an award as the ACC's Outstanding Student-Athlete for 1:965-66. Coach Jim Kehoe's Terrapins not only ran away with the Con ference Division, but Maryland' Freshman team scored 32' points to nose out the UNC Frosh by one point.
