For those who don't know, these initials belong to the late Dr. George A r ma tr on g W a u c h o p e, a former head of the English department, a F e 1 1 o w of Washington and - Lee University, and a Phi Beta Kappa. In 1 9 1 1 Dr. W a uchope w r o t e the two v e r s e s of the "A 1 i a Mater" of our fair Uni versity. Dr. Wauchope c a m e to Caro lina after re ceiving his Ph.D. f r o m i Washington and Game Lee. While at G. Carolina he had a large role in the academic and social progress of the University. Ile and his wife sponsored Caro lina's first sorority, the Panethellic Society. Dr. W-auchope also partici pated in the first extension course program at the University. Dr. W. Yeaton Wagener, now one of the outstanding professors in Carolina's English department, came to Carolina from Washing Quo You know it. The teaching success that Dr. Wauchope' enjoyed proves that the tough est teachers are remembered as the best.
