Explaining that flag football is tougher to call than tackle, Walt -4ated that there are more rules, such as guarding the flags, leaving the feet, etc., which keep the ref cree on his toes. lie added that a lot of arguments are caused by the participants nott knowing the rules. Although Walt has been "ref fing" here for three years, he was no newcomer to the business when he started. While out of school, he had umpired in a high school base ball league non-professionally in his hometown. Plans for the future are indefi nite, but Walt is contemplating going to graduate school at Purdue I or North Carolina after graduat ing in January, 1967. One thing is definite; Walt would like to be a college referee. It is in his blood. Expounding on the subject, the "old pro" states that it is some times difficult to break into the college rank. There are tests to be( taken, technicalities to learn and experience to gain. A number of college referees are taken from high school ranks, .-o Walt will probably start there. Surely, to referee professionally as an avocation will supplement his income, but Walt will make it - because he enjoys it.
