One such memorial is Maxey Monument, which stands in the middle of the Horseshoe. Maxcy Monument was erected in 1827 by the Clariosophic So ciety in honor of Dr. Jonathan Maxcy, the University's first president. Robert Mills was em ployed to design it, and William Brown built the monument ac cording to Mill's plans. It is made of white Italian marble and can boast being the second in the world to be crowned with a tripod. This bronze tripod alone cost $100. The cornerstone was laid on De cember 15, 1827, with much cere mony. Along with the society and citizens of Columbia, the Masons approved and dedicated Maxey Monument. An invitAtion had also been extended to the Euphradian Society to paiticipate in the Satur day morning activities. Because the sister society felt their num ber was too small to make their presence expedient they graciously declined the invitaion. With the exceptIon of the tri pod, the monument is typical of Mill's architecture and has no symbolic meaning. The epitaph was written by George McDuffie and translated into Latin by Pro fessor Robert Henry.
