Rugged For Spc By DON HULT Staff Writer Vince Lombardi, head coach of the National Football League Green Bay Packers and one of the most profound football minds in the sport, exhorts his running hacks to "run to daylight"-that is, if the runner finds a closed hole where the play was supposed to go, he should run where he sees the nearest opening. After four years of "helmet cracking" on the rugged gridirons of Pennsylvania, freshman half back George Daskalakes took heed of the Lombardi football philoso phy and ran through 77 yards of (laylight to bring the Biddies their first victory of the '66 season, a 13-7 come-from-behind triumph oVer The Citadel freshmen. George hails from AllentAwn, Pa., a city and state where foot ball truly reigns supreme and which pri<les itself oi its proluc Aion of good football players. H1is football career began at the age of nine. Iy the t:me he en tered Allentown's Dieruff Ifigh School, )asky was thoroughly groun<le(l in the fun<lamentals of blocking and tackling. With the aild of his backfield Noneh, Rtichar<d Tracy,(;rg gained the finer skills of ball 1arrying an<l pass receiving to go along with the fun<damentals and became a iulti-tilented back playing halfback, fullback and flanker-back during his scholastic CYeer. Ilis most outstanding single ac romphishment was leading Dieruff to an upset victory over Shamokin Ifigh, to shatter that team's 48 rame wvin-streak. WEI;H1TLI FTING After his senior year George's harher suggested a program of heavy weightlifting to build up (;oreg's stature for college foot ball. A fter months of sweat and strain the hard-hitting halfback had increased from 185 to 210 pounds. If,mwever, one day in the spring of his last year of high school, (orge was doing squats with 875 pwunds across his shoulders when he lost his balance, fell back ward and tore most of his ab doninal muscies. For the next few weeks he cOUld eat very little and then only wi'h great pain and his weight fell to a scant NO pounds. So instead of going on to col lege, George decided upon a year of prep school to build himself up MnCe more. It was then that a foothall talent scout from West Point became interested in his career, and George was making Ilans to be'one a Cadet. It was a decision that he now hardly regrets, for his first im pressions of Carolina have been most favorable, "The people down here are so genuinely friendly; the facilities here are unbeliev able; the Gamecocks' schedule is ruite a challenge, and, oh, these Southern girls. Right now George's academic and career plans are undecided but he is well aware of Coach Dietzel's admonishments of not being able "to peal a football and eat it" once his playing career is finished. WORKING HARI) However, while he's here at Carolina George is looking for ward to playing a lot of football, especially <,n offense. lie's work ing hard to improve his moves in the open field. Up till now George has been running in the Jimmy Taylor style, running over would-bc tacklers "just to sting them." Like Taylor, the great Packer fullback who also played his col lege football under Paul Dietzel George may change his style from "running through them to running around them and into daylight." e d s: is' just one of eoulder' clothing. \JG LOT Carolina quarterback Mike Fair a roiloock in the form of W%ake fenie 4en1l Joe st-jie in last Satur belmween the Gamevmcks anid 11 USC Run In Secon< By FRANK WELLS T Staff Writer The Carolina cross-country track as team met iefeat for the soc,nl d is consecttive week last Friday. fin- ( ar, ishiniz last in a four-way affair to held on 'I 1lmson's home fieid.
