McCord won a football scholar ship while at Manning High School where he was an outstand ing halfback, and came to Caro lina with hopes of playing offen- I sive back for the Gamecocks. Listed as a third-string offen sive back during spring practice, he saw little hope of playing much in the games this fall. When the opportunity to make the move ui to first-string defense came, he was eager to make the change. 1 rhe new position placed a lot of responsibility on the 19-year-old sophomore, but his desire to play helped him to face the pressure of filling the shoes of "Butch" Reeves. In this new position, whatever Toy lacks in size he makes up for it in speed and alertness. This combinlation of talents has made him a stalwart on Gamecock de fense. These talents were brought to the surface back at Manning 11igh, where lie won letters not only in football, but also in bas ketball, baseball and track. With a full load of studies in Business Administration, however, Toy is resigned to focus his at :enItio to just football and base ball. With the accomplishment of one goal, however, he establishes a new one anld then pulrstues it with the vigor and determination not possessed by mally men. During his three varsity years, Gaffney won one state championship and two conference championships. lIe was chosen the most out standing I i n e m a n in the 1962 Shrine Howl game. Phillips said the game he re members most is last year's battle with arch-rival Clemson when the Gamecocks scored a 17-16 victory. "The LSI game this year was very inspiring," he added. Ife feels the 1966 edition of the Gamecocks will improve as the season progresses, but "too many people are expecting too much in too little time." When asked about the Gamecock i(oaIching staff, Phillips said, "The whole team has deep admiratioi for Coach I)ietzel and his entire staff. Coach I)ietzel is a tremen dous organizer."
