Meet Terps, Cayw Gamecoc By TONY SMITH Staff Writer Tonight In College Park, Mary land, the USC Gamecocks will face the first of two crucial contests in the Atlantic Coast Conference when they take on the University of Maryland. The Gamecocks, presently 3-9 in the ACC, must have wins tonight over Maryland (6-6) and tomorrow Sover Virginia (3-8) to escape the ACC cellar. These games will by no means be easy ones for the Gamecocks. The Terrapins of Maryland held an Say it with I send a floral "messa and just, "C WUhen you tvant to remember a birthday ... send flowers. The Gamecocks had North Caro lina State surge from nine points behind to defeat them 68-63 on Friday night. Saturday night the University of North Carolina wore down the Gamecocks' stall and easily pulled away from them 83-71. The grim significance of to night's 'game with Maryland is that it was the Terrapins who started the Gamecocks on their los ing streak. Maryland bombed the Gamecocks, 78-63, on January 31, after the Gamecocks had essen tially done the same to Virginia on January 29 when they defeated the Cavaliers 82-64. The main significance of to night's and tomorrow's games is that if the Gamecocks lose and re main in the ACC cellar they will have to play Duke in the opening round of the ACC tournament. However, the Gamecocks have been the only ACC team to defeat Duke and fought them down to the wire before losing 41-38 on Febru Ary 14. Skip's value to USC, however, does not lie entirely in his danc ing. It lies in the fact that he is a good basketball player, an in spirational and dedicated fellow, and as another Carolina student has said, "just an all-around good guy. When the Gamecocks come to the .idelines for a time-out during a tense and important game, it is fired-up Skit Kickey who, when not in the line-up himself, is fir.-t out to greet his teammates,. with a slap on the backside and words of praise andi encouragement. When in the !ine up, he is unsurpassed in his hustle, and he's b e (- ) known to throw som beautiful passes. WN h e n1 VSC goes back downcourt to et up its de fcn-es.
