Locke JOHN L 1 think we can safely say that .h'nday night our basketball team 4howed the stuff of which they are made. It's no secret that Vic Bubas and I)uke were out to get us. Big Warren Chapman, a Duke sub, was heard to remark, "We're not go ing to just beat South Carolina. We're going to kill 'em." Before and at the game, Duke students carried cards on which was emblazoned one ominous word, "Revenge." People speculated as to whether Bubas would try to triple or merely double our score. Well, when it was all over, the score was 41-38, and the mighty Blue Devils could consider them selves very, very lucky to get away. Our Gamecocks proved themselves once again, picked themselves up off the floor to carry the fight to Duke, and it was almost Dec. 6, 1965, all over again. Yes, Frank McGuire's men proved themselves. But the good ole USC fans never got started the second half of the season. You'd think Carolina people could take an occasional defeat. C. State, being realistic about v, these things, spends money on its e swimming program. As Willis Casey, the Wolfpack coach, has said, "The reason we have goodl t teams is we give scholarship aid. . . . If a coach doesn't have the S horses, he has to go at a walking pace." This seems to me to make sense. State is ranked among the top five college swimming squads t in the country and has attained b much prestige with its swim pro gram.
