Certainly the Field House is not the only growing pain of the University, but while t h e r e is near adequate, though not overflowing, sci ence space, and office space, there is not even close to ade quate facilities for basketball or physical education classes. Weldon, who took over Game cock baseball fortunes from Bob Reising, had pitchers and catch ers report Monday with other candidates scheduled to begin pre season workouts next week. South Carolina opens a 23-game season March 23. Weldon has five letterman pitch ers led by lefthanders Loveard Mc Michael (6-2), Bobby Bryant (4-3), and Eddie Chester (2-2). Righthanders include relief pitch ers Steve Ravan (3-0), and Les Evans (0-3). McMichael and Ev ans are seniors. Pitchers, all righthanders, up from last year's 15-1 frosh team include Billy Reitmeier (5-0), Larry Womack (2-0), and Bob Rollings (2-0). The catching corps is headed by junior Dan Scarpa the 1964 All Atlantic Coast Conference back-I stop who led the Gamecocks in hitting with a .344 mark. Other letterman catchers include Bobbyl Northcutt (.231), and Howard Brutherton (.098). Bob Mauro hit .286 with last year's frosh. They took a share of the ACC championship, despite losing five games. It's not very gratifying to stop and real ize that for a Carolina athletic team, a break-even season is a satisfactory one. Over the years, Gamecock ath letes have seldom managed to win as many as they have lost. Let's face it. In athletics, Carolina has a losing tradition. This is bad. It hurts school spirit and pride. Recently, the USC athletic pro gram has shown encouraging signs of emerging from the dark ages. The football team did look good many times this past fall. Our tennis and swimming teams are vastly improved, and the freshman contingents in both sports rank among the finest in t.he region. The baseball team, sporting a new coach in Dick Wel don and some exciting young sophomores, promises to be the best in USC history. All this is great, but still there are shadows looming over USC athletic hopes. Our coaches are put in the precarious position of not having contracts. This lack of security has already cost us Dick Bestwick and Bud Carson, two fine assistant football coaches.
