Locke TERRY Writing a column like this is not very difficult, especially when you have a strong interest in the subject. . . . Start by thinking of a current sports event, expanding on the thought, and adding your own ideas. That should fill at least the first paragraph.... Then peruse through Sports Illustrated or The Sporting News, etc. Check the sports sections of the St. Louis Post-Diepatch or the Philadelphia Inquirer and you'll probably find some news bits not seen in a local paper.... Go up to the micro-film room in McKissick, or dig through the stacks of old Gamecocks and Garnet and Blacks at the Caro liniana.... In short, learn a little, - tell a little, and have a ball! But there's more to it than printed pages and pictures. There are people - the most important ingredient. . . . For the tailspinning Biddies, it was their fourth defeat of the season and the fourth in the last five games. Since Grosso was side lined with a badly cut wrist, his faltering teammates have managed but a single victory, 93-62, over King's College on January 3. Be tween that and the Sparbanburg game last Friday, the Biddies lost a heartbreaker to Charleston's Baptist College, 73-69, when a last-ditch rally fell just short. SUB HITS 21 Spartanburg's Pioneers sported three twenty-plus scorers in their battle with USC. Sterling Case had 28, Ed Raines 26, and sub Rick Dunagan came off the bench and hit for 21 to bolster the SJC attack. Coach Buck Freeman's frosh put five men in double figures, led by Bob Felter with 20 points. He was followed by Charlie Vacca with 17, Eddie Powell, 16, Hank Martin, 15, and Clyde Lewellen, 12. The Biddies tried both zone and man-to-man defenses against the Pioneers, but nothing seemed to work. Spartanburg pressed all Shrine Bowl Star Signs With USC Over the Christmas holidays, USC football coaches signed four Shrine Bowl football stars to grants-in-aid. They include Mac Tharpe of Charlotte, Fletcher Spigner of Columbia, and Fran Whitlock and Jeff Garren of Greer. Tharpe is perhaps the prize catch. The 210-pound fullback-linebacker is formerly of Greenwood where he played under Pinky Babb. Jack Thompson's USC aquamen won nine of the 11 events in com pletely dominating the dual meet. Coach Thompson singled out several of his team for individual mention, particularly Jeff Kincaid. Kincaid, the team captain, won both the 200- and 500-yard free style events. "Jeff did a real fine job," said Thompson. "le was not really pushed but swam exceptionally well, especially in the 500-yard event. "Bill Muller swam very well. He was just shy of the school rec ord in the individual medley and placed second to Kincaid in the 500-yard free style event. "Chic Langnehs looked very good in the diving," continued Thompson. They have to be an average student and a hero at the same time. They are supposed to be an average student which is impossi ble under any circumstances. Con trary to popular belief, it is hard b e i n g the guy who made the basket that won the game or the one that made the all-important touchdown pass. Every student on campus knows the athlete's name and face and the student secretly believes that this guy knows him. When Harry Hero fails to smile he is conceited. We are always ready to say "good game" after a winning one and know what they did wrong when they lose. When Harry sits in front of us in class, we know he really thinks we are swell even if we wait for him to speak first and get mad when he doesn't. Harry makes a good grade in a course and the professor is partial because he is an athlete. Athletes, supposedly, are dumb and good grades simply mean they had the "skinny." They have to make higher on the entrance examination to get into c o ll e g e and they have to maintain a certain average to play ball. Harry Hero also belongs to the public. The university claims him and so does every boy (and some times girls) from six years old up. They have their one hero who is theirs alone. ie may play bas ketball, baseball and the all-im portant football players. At the basketball game, you can see the kids run to get the autograph of their superman. J. R. Wilburn signs his name at least ten times at each game. He is proud to be their hero but it takes hard work. B e n n y Galloway expresses it this way, "To be a good athlete you have to be dedicated to the sport. It takes more than just lov ing the sport. You have to live it! I have to think about football all year round. Off season, I usually do a lot of running, swimming, playing basketball with some of the guys, and I also set monu ments to stay in condition. It's a lot easier to stay in condition than to get back into condition." How do the athletes react to all their fame and glory? They just smile and use their sense of humor which is v,ery necessary in being an athlete. Al Sal expressed it so exactly with "I'd like to be liked by everybody, because when peo ple like me I usually like them. I'd like to like everybody."
