With Virginia leading in the second quarter after a scoring pass from All ACC back Bob Davis to end Ed Carrington, the G a m e c o c k s blocked their DOUG SEATER fifth p u n t of All-ACC Candidate the season. De fensTve end Doug Senter smothered the hall off the foot of Virginia's punter lill, scooped it up and raced into the end zone for the first SC touchdown. Jimmy Poole kicked the extra point to even the score at 7-7. SMIT SCORES Virginia failed to move the foot hall following the kick-off and punted to the Carolina thirty three. In ten plays reserve quar terback Ted Wingard moved the team to the Virginia twenty-eight yard line. On third down and eight Wing lard fired the ball up the middle after being hit hard by a Virginia lineman. The pass was high and wobbly, but halfback Jule Smith broke between three Cavaliers de fenders to grab the ball in the end zone for the second Gamecock touchdown. Once again Jimmy Poole converted to give Carolina a 14-7 lead. On the next series of plays two runs netted seven yards and a third-down pass was incomplete. On fourth down Jimmy Poole split the uprights from the sixteen-yard-line giving Carolina a 17-7 lead. It stayed that way as the Gamecocks evened their record at 4-4. FORMER GAMECOCK SPORTS EDITOR OFFERS COMMENTS For the first time in five years, and that is just how long I have been associated with the Fightin' Gamecocks, they have a complete football t e a m. I was most im pressed with the play of our de fensive ends and backs. In my four years at Carolina, I don't think I ever saw any three defensive backs play better than Bobby Bryant, Benny Galloway and Stan Juk. Bobby Bryant covered Hodges' passes to perfection, allowing the Virginia receivers to catch the pass thrown over the middle on a loop-in pattern. On two occasions Bryant knocked down third-down passes that were thrown right on target. Ben Garnto showed the greatest second effort of any Carolina back I have ever seen play, and that includes Billy Gambrell. Several times the Virginia defense trapped Garnto behind the line, but each time he bulled his way back to scrimmage and then some. It is not hard to understand how Ben has broken away this season for JULIE ANDREWS Phone Orders Accepted What's ne "Poor Boy" sweatE look (illustrated)? from Aspen, Colo see ..,. we have c new sportswear from traditional t< llustrated - R sweater with ma ings, 7.98 Checkered skirt, 9 SALE traditional Sweaters al es 17-7 ers At Va. long runs. The blocked punt was the high light of the game because it gave Carolina the lift they needed. I had never seen Carolina block a punt, but it seems to have become a habit this year, so I was not sur prised when Doug Senter scam pared into the end zone with the ball. With two tough opponents left on the schedule, the Gamecocks face a stern test, but from what I saw up in Charlottesville, they have the horses to win. Intran a total of 40 points. Zone V also landed two firsts and one second for 15 points, followed by Zone VI's 14, including a first in the 200-yd. medley relay. The finals will be held Wednes day, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. After two postponements, all swimmers should be anxious to hit the water in efforts to bring home trophies for their respective teams.
