The Gamecocks lost three fum les, and quarterback Mike Faih iad four passes picked off by the lert Terps. The loss dropped Carolina'E >verall record to 3-4 and evene< 'heir ACC mark at 2-2. In addi 'ion to putting a severe crimp ir [TSC's title aspirations, the defea -was costly in another way. Tight end John Breeden suffere< 'orn knee ligaments and is los lor the season. Tailback Ben Garnto, whose per formance was one of the few bright spots for USC against Maryland, was knocked around a good bit but emerged with only bruises to show for it. Garnto, Fair, Phil Branson, J. R. Wilburn, and Wayne Tucker played some good offense for the Gamecocks, while Legat, Bob Gun nels, Stan Juk, Doug Senter, and Benny Galloway came up with a few good defensive plays. Aside from that, things were grim. Carolina's opponent tomorrow, UVA, also took it on the chin in its Homecoming game last week end, bowing to N. C. State, 13-0. George Blackburn's Cavaliers, now 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the confer ence, were backed up in their own real estate most of the game by a hard-charging Wolfpack defense and crossed midfield only four times, once on a blocked punt. .EC I RIA KK 4I URIST 1N;-DOWN he collegian with- an eye for in a traditional wardrobe. d collar . .masterful tailor. >rtionate taering. They can score on you and score quickly. They are very capable of the home run, the long bomb." The Cavs run from a pro-type offense, spearheaded by one of the finest backfields in Virginia his tory. Senior quarterback Tom Hodges of Alexandria, Va., is roll ing up yardage at a fantastic rate, both in the air and on the ground, and is seriously endanger ing both Gary Cuozzo's Va. career passing mark and Bill Dudley's Va. season total offense record. Hodges has 162 career comple tions, compared to 180 for Cuozzo, and has racked up a shade over 1,400 yards total offense this year, compared to Dudley's 1941 stand ard of 1,824 yards. The six-foot, 185-pounder has thrown 93 pass completions so far this season for about 1.100 yards, and leads the ACC both in tot9l offense and passing. Going into last Satur (lay's encounter with N. C. State, Hodges' total yardage was eighth highest in the country. On the receiving end of 35 of Hodges' passes has been team co captain John Pincavage, a speedy, 180-pound flankerback from Mohnton, Pa. Those 35 catches have accounted for 504 yards. In addition, Pincavage has returned kick-offs for more than 240 yards, including a 90-yarder for a touch down against West Virginia, and has run up 150 more yards on punt returns. Pincavage has thus gained almost 900 yards total of fense all by himself. Impressive as their credentials are. Hodges and Pincavage are not the whole show by any means. Junior Bob Davis, who was the Cavalier quarterback before be ing shifted to a halfback spot, is a dangerous, elusive runner and gives Coach George Blackburn a top-notch threat on the halfback pass. Bob Dunphey, 6-0 and 200, and Carrell Jarvis, 6-2 and 193, com prise a fine 1-2 fullback punch, providing power to augment the explosive speed and talent of ,Davis and Pincavage. End Larry Molinari, Virginia's number three receiver and senior guard Bob Prusmack are the out standing Cavalier offensive line men. On defense, U.Va.'s line is sparked by Don Parker, a 6-3, 240 pound end from Honolulu, Hawaii; Bob Kowalkowski, 6-3 and 240 also, and a tackle from New Ken sington, Pa.; and tackle John (The Dwarf) Naponick, six feet eleven inches and 295 pounds. Picture that! Both of Virginia's last two op ponents VPI and N. C. State, have N4L QLARTRIACK MIKE FAIR for mwond Gamecock toucldiowti beaten the Cavaliers (22-14 and 13-0) by controlling the ball, arid that, says Coaches Bass andi Floyd, is what the Gamecocks must do to win. USC and Virginia have each scored 354 points in their 22-ganw rivalry which dates back to 1912. Carolina leads the series twelve Locke TERRY Nobody likes to lose, but per haps last week's loss to Maryland can be softened by considering th role played by "mistakes." Goofs, like fumbles and having passes intercepted, are alway unpredictable. Ability and in ability are usually seasonal.
