u Tb Now T By SANDY HUGGINS Staff Writer There is a certain degree of something close to "aristocracy" in society anywhere; there are the have# and the have-nots, the want and the want-not*, the gets and the get-note. And there is a great middle group of don't-care. Carolina is a society, and within that society is a relatively small but influential - "aristocracy." They are the wants who got and now have whatever it is they wanted in the first place. They are the men and women who are the members of twenty-one organi zations that go by the names, brotherhoods and sisterhoods - Carolina's fraternities and sorori ties. Carolina as a whole has a need for fraternities and sororities. Both offer excellent opportunities to become well acquainted with a group that remains fairly constant. The people who are there the first time are there the second and third times, too. This school is big enough to lose oneself in and lose confidence in oneself at the same time; the tiny bit of prestige at tached to "belonging" is a panacea for the isolation of aloneness. Per haps the most apparent fact about belonging is that it is just fun. Football and sunset and the Picadilly and bridge are infinitely more fun when they are shared. In fact, who would go alone to a football game? It is (supposedly) too dangerous with all these drunken orgies that are going on in the stands. And a persen would look - and probably feel - a little unusual walking in the Picadilly (or any where else, for that matter) alone. The first smoker was held Tues day night, and the second, at tended by invitation only, was held Thursday night. APO is a national service fra ternity dedicated to the principle of developing leadership through service. Representing a wide cross section of student interests, APO endeavors to render meaningful service to the campus, to the com munity, and to the nation. Iota Mu Chapter's membership is comprised of those Carolina men whose interests in service have qualified them for a period of pledgeship, preparing them for eventual initiation into active membership in the fraternity. Woven into this program of service is a strong web of brother hood, fostered by a program of social events, both formal and in formal. Then they are probably much more fun than the blase blah-blah of snobbism. Anything genuine, sincere, spontaneous, and friendly (even leap frog) is in finitely better than an y t h i n g C arti f ici al, false, forced, and C pseudo-suave (especially some of the "enlightening" conversations 1 that went on during rush). t Leap frog is probably an ex treme case, and a rare one, in the first instance; and not all of the conversations during rush were artificial question-and-answer ping pong. The point is that after rush is finished (and it is) there is a multitude of interesting, enjoy able, exciting things to do that would not have been as much fun before. That tinge of disappointment that came to some is a very tran sient, temporary condition. There is no avenue of enjoyment closed just because the hoped-for bid was not in that little brown envelope. Right now Carolina and Colum bia are in the beginning of a very wonderful aftermath; the air is beginning to turn crisp, the first hues of autumn leaves are show ing, the Gamecocks are on the win ning side of the record, pledges are getting their first taste of that aftermath of aristocratic aspiration, and doughnuts and coffee are beginning to taste very good again. "Times is a-changin'," and fraternities and sororities are too. The melancholy days are come -and the rich, glorious, fun ones have, too. Rejoice, dear pledge; rejoice. (You too, wearing the pin.)
