Trac Weems Baskin winds up his second most successful season in 17 years as track and field coach at USC this weekend when he takes the Gamecocks to Raleigh for the Atlantic Coast Conference outdoor meet. After losing their opening dual meet to Florida State this spring, the Gamecocks won seven in a row and took the team championship last Saturday in the 38th Annual South C a r o I i n a Intercollegiate Meet at the Rex Enright Athletic Center here. It was Baskin's ninth state meet title in 16 seasons, but his first since 1961. In 11 previous AC, meets, the Gamecocks have fin ished fourth 10 times and fifth once. This year, however, they are given a good chance of finishing second behind perennial champion Maryland, although injuries to three key performers could hurt. Gamecocks set five new school records and tied three others this year. New marks include 3:15.4 by the mile relay team of Eddie Sonnenfeld, Bland Addison, Bob Taylor and Bob Crombie; and .11.8 by the 440-relay team of Fulton Dukes. Sonnenfeld, John Hemmer and Mike McGuinness. New individual records included 172' 4%" in the discus by Art Swarts; 23' 9%" in the broad jump by Woody Chapman; and 4:08.1 in the mile by Crombie. ( rombie twice tied the 1:51.5 half mile record lie established last seasmn; McGuinness tied the .17.4 quarter-Imlile record set in 1948 by (Ify the a uthor TESTS, AND HO Just the other night I was sa. you think the importance of being overemphasized?".
